Hi Sarah
Here in the UK the legal age to take a pup home is 8 weeks old, but I understand it is 12 weeks in the USA.
It is not uncommon for puppies to go home at 6 weeks here in the UK but I would recommend that if they can, they should stay with their mom till 8 weeks.
My pup is 8 weeks old today and I took her home at 6 weeks.
At the moment she is bites a lot because he teeth have been coming through but she bites hard and hurts you, This I will have to teach her is wrong.
If she had stayed with her mom and litter mates till 8 weeks she would have learned how hard is acceptable to bite from the rest of the litter and her mom.
She didnt have any health issues but it is very scary to take them home so small and its a whole lot of worry.
In the UK as soon as they start eating dog food instead of feeding from their mom they usually go to their new homes, but like I said the reason why they should stay till 8 weeks is not because of food it's because they learn an awful lot from the rest of the litter and there mom in those couple of weeks.
If you do take her at 6 weeks make sure you have a vet check her over.
She will need to be wormed at 6 weeks and again a couple of weeks later (should tell you when and how on the box of worming syrup/tablets).
She will also need her first needle between 6-8 weeks and her next a few weeks after.
Let us know how you get on and feel free to contact me if you want any more info on having a younger pup. Good luck
