Well I can tell you I dont have my baby Yorkie yet but I am suppost to get him the end of March and I have a 10 month old and a 7 year old, my 7 year old is wonderful and gentle and my 10 month old is, well a 10 month old, you just have to be very careful when it comes to your children handling the dog, if you do let them handle it. Im sure your 6yr. old is old enough to know right from wrong and as far as your 1yr. old just make sure you keep a close eye on them together. My breeder has told me this, and she also said that yorkie's can make great pets for families with children, just keep a close eye on them together. I cant wait to get my yorkie baby and I know my children will grow up and learn to respect dogs and animals, what a better way to learn!! Hope that helps you some! P.S. I know alot of families with children that have yorkies also!! Cara

supervision that is what is boils down to, Supervise Play time, until you feel comfortable with your kids & new puppy been alone or playing alone and maybe it will be years before you can actually trust them a few seconds alone, I don't have any children but I have 2 Rottweilers, they do not only have a bad rep( Rottweilers that is they do have it bad) not my babies they are the sweetest dogs in the world, but they are very large. All I can say is they get along just fine, of course they can't play with my yorkie like they would like to or how they play with each other, but I supervise their time together, just so they get to know each other, and play with each other, gently, I find my self saying that a lot and be careful ! but If can manage 2 larger Rottweilers getting along (2 over 120 pound Rotties) with my Nemo ( 1.pound 4 ounces Yorkie) you should be ok, after all we are in this familly all together now, But I definatly think supervision is the key..It should be a lot easier for you since you kids will understand that you have to be gentleand they will get older and it will be easier for you. Good luck and have patience, as far as for me, We will always have supervise Play time p/s My Simba ( 140 lbs) & Nala ( 120lbs) ( Rottweilers they are affraid of Nemo, in the short 3 weeks he runs the house, short stuff is the boss around, even my boss sometimes (LOL) Last edited by princecharlie10; 02-22-2005 at 08:23 PM.

well....... if it is teh size and the delicate nature of yorkies that are the problem ...... you could always get a silky terrier, they look the same but are bigger

I don't have any little ones in the home full time, but I do have 2 grand-kids that seem to be here alot. I worried ALOT about them around my new Lil BIt....she is really small and a bit fragile...... Adam, the 4 year old has been no problem......He understands when I say "take off you shoes and sit on the floor on your bottom".....Lil Bit just loves him and loves to climb and pile all over him..... The other one, Macy, is 22 months and just naturally very prone to running and falling ALOT!!! I could just imagine her crushing the poor little thing. All that said, it really is all about supervision!!!!! SOmetimes I feel awful fussing at the kids to watch out for the dog...but after 3 weeks it is beginning to pay off. Also, after a while Lil Bit is tired and I can put her in her play-yard for a nap and eveyone can play and run and fall and just go at it!!! GOOD LUCK........and kiss those little rug rats of the head for me!!!!!!!!
