| Neighbor's intact male yorkie...I have questions I just met a new neighbor with an adorable male Yorkie. I actually stopped him in the street to say hello. Anyway, we got to talking the second time we met and his little guy is 2 years old, and 4 lbs of precious. He is also not neutered and he mentioned that a woman had been asking them to let her use their pet to breed with her MORKIE and the guy didn't know if he would or not. This fellow is a senior citizen and not very dog savvy even if he does have a darling dog. I advised him not to start letting anyone use his dog for breeding just to be breeding. My personal opinion is that unless you are a breeder you don't want a fully intact male running around that has gotten to breed before but isn't going to get to do it often. I think they mark more and may even develop other issues. If you aren't breeding for very good reason why do it at all. I told him the woman with the female has something to gain by selling the pups but unless he wants a pup or needs the stud fee (which I know he doesn't) he won't gain anything. Also unless there is an experienced person there to supervise the breeding there could be problems. Am I right? Do any of you have good thoughts for me to pass on to this nice guy so he can turn this woman down and not feel bad about it?

| First off anyone that stop you in the street to ask you to breed your dog needs to be ignored! Breeding is not just putting 2 dogs together to make puppies. You need to know what you are doing. What is the purpose of this breeding other than to make a MIXED breed dog. This woman has a Yorkie/Maltese mix and want to mix it again with a Yorkie? What is the point and what is she trying to appomplish other than adding more dogs into this world. My head is just spinning at this point the insanity of people and the lack of common sense that goes into their thought process. You need to explain to your neighbor that his male could have a permanent change to his personality and not in a good way. I am not a breeder but I will see if I can find someone that can explain this better than I can. For the health of his male he should seriously consider having him neutered.

| While some of what you said has some good information. Read the following so that you can arm yourself with facts. The following is written in plain english so that it is very understandable. http://www.yorkietalk.com/forums/yor...-answered.html Has a lot of info, but there is more. Read a thread in the Sick and Injured forum. A pup that is very ill and might not make it, she is a result of a cross breeding. Her multiple diseases were passed to to her by her parents, so she got the worst of both breeds. You can also inform him that being the stud owner, he is just as responsible for anything that may go wrong. He is also responsible to take any pups that can't be placed or any that are returned.

I ♥ Joey & Ralphie! Donating Member | One thing I didn't know is that a male can get a sexually transmitted disease from a female even if it's the first time for both. Unless he's actually breeding to improve the breed he will be adding to the ever-increasing population of dogs, and it's really hard to find homes for them all. Boys can experience personally changes and be more interested in the girl down the street than anything else. I'm glad you are helping educate this man. You might also want to tell him that the number one cause of death in unneutered males is due to injuries received in a car accident. Unneutered males tend to run away a lot. The sooner he neuters the less likely the dog will develop a marking problem.

| My neighbor also has an intact male yorkie; I would guess he's about 7 years old. Lucy has not yet been spayed due to her liver issues and whenever we walk past his house; she wants to play with him. He is tied up outside in the front yard most of the time and I feel sorry for him; so I usually let her play w/him for a few minutes. He acts almost like ina frenzy when we walk past. Here's my question - he couldn't suddenly jump on her and get her pregnant could he? I mean, how quick could that happen? Cause I definitely don't want that and wonder if I should let her play with him. |

I wouldn't take her for walks if she is in heat. It can happen fast. Other than that time they are fine to play together.

| Well, they don't really tie him up all day because they are both working and he is inside. Mostly of an evening when they are home. They are sweet people - but basically have three young children and no time for a doggie. But he doesn't go for walks; for rides in the car . . all the things that mine do. I will be careful though - because I didn't realize it could happen in seconds. My Lucy is the one with liver issues so we are holding off on her spay. I guess he'll just have to find another playmate! Lucy already has our Westie, Ringo, who is neutered. But she always wants to play with the other yorkie when we walk past their house. He looks a little crazed when he is playing with her - perhaps he is slightly warped from being alone so much. But he always looks like he could jump her at a moment's notice. Those boys - you know how they are! We are taking no chances! So we'll have to stay away from there for a while. Thank you. |
