| OMG! Am I allergic to OMG! Am I allergic to all my yorkies? I have had this terrible allergy condition since the last week in January of this year. It has continued to get worse. I wake up in the mornings with this terrible condition. It wakes me up in the dead of night. I went to the allergist yesterday, 4-28-10 and I initially spoke to him of my conditions. The doctor then had me take a test, where they prick your arm about 23 times for several allergies. Many were from trees and grasses. AND ONE WAS FROM 'DOG", I told the doctor about my babies and he said dont let them onto the bed, keep them in another room at night. He told me about washing my linens, etc. I told him I was an extremist when it came to cleanliness. I washed all my linens, towels, no more rugs and everything is put away. I went out yesterday and re washed all my stuff with a soap that has no perfumes, etc. What do you think about all this mess? I never had an allergy in my life. Maybe its all the times I take the yorkies to the park. There are many trees there. I only stay about an hour.As I type this, my sinuses are raging! Thanks!

| I have heard of other people whose allergies are worsened by yorkies even though they are considered hypoallergenic... they have been helped by washing them more frequently.

| Allergies Thank you for your reply to my situation. I give a bath to all the yorkies about once a week. I dont apply any perfumes, or sprays to them. I know a lot of people who do. I use a non allergenic shampoo for them. Hopefully, all will be well and I will think positive about the whole situation. I guess also, we are in allergy season. Have a good day!

| Just a thought, why don't you try keeping the dogs in a separate room at night for a couple days and see if you notice a difference?

| I was having the same problem, started taking Claritan D and I was better in days. You have to get it from the pharmacy, but it is over the counter. Take it first thing in the morning as it can keep you up at night. I use the 24 hr kind. It has really helped, I think that the pollen is just bad this year because of all the rains. |

| Yes, I will get some this morning. I will give it a try. I just hate the constant sneezing, etc. Thanks for the good advice.

| It may not be the dogs, but the dust and pollen that they collect, on your outings. You keep them all in long coat, so they pick up more dust. What would they think of being vaccumed? or light coats when you are out, and just wash their legs more frequently... I would never give mine up, either, but they are picking up more dust this year than others. Not enough rain here to wash the pollen away! Good luck.

| Allergies can start and stop at anytime. Strange really but it's true. The pollen count is very high this year, I've read. Being in CA your weather is always hot and things bloom daily. I feel certain it's not the dogs but they could very well be carring in the pollen on their coats etc. I have sinuses and I find Nasilnex does wonders when it's that time of year, like now. LOL It's a prescription like the other's. Sometime you have to try different things until you find one that suits you. Feel better soon, keep the tissues close by but don't let the babies get to them. We know what a mess they can make and Yorkies do love kleenex. |

I agree, the pollen is really bad here this year, and even though you've never been allergic, you can have an extreme allergy, as you get older. When your doctor said you showed positive for "dog" allergies, it just means that if you had another dog in your life your allergies would probably be much worse. Yorkies don't have the double coat and don't shed like most breeds so there is much less dander than with other breeds. Also, if the dogs were causing the problem, it would be bad all year long, and not severe in spring when grasses are growing. So if you allergies become better in winter, you will know it's grass not your dogs that are causing your reaction.

| Nope...popular misconception. Yorkies are a non-shedding breed, but that's about it. Allergies to dogs can be a result of sensitivies to various things--hair, dander, saliva. Yorkies are no different than that in any capacity other than they don't shed. |

Donating YT 4000 Club Member | My first thought is that it's most likely the pollen and dust the dogs pick up from their walks. I'm basing this on it being a new set of symptoms and that you've probably had your dogs since prior to the onset. You've gotten good advice on washing everything, having the dogs sleeping somewhere else for a few days, etc. You might also want to change out your air filter in your heating/ac system and even get the air ducts cleaned. I have horrible allergies to dust and pollen. I purchased an air filter from Oreck for my bedroom and it made a huge difference for me.
