| camping- any precautions needed Hello! We are planning on going tent camping in Florida for a couple of nights in May and have not really done this with a dog before. "Hobo" will be 5 months old when we do this and I wondered if we needed to do or take anything specific. What I remember from camping is that many of the larger dogs were chained up (to a tree, stake in the ground, etc). while their owners walked down to the pool, etc., but that would not work with our pup as she is about 4 pounds and I'd be scared something would get her. For those who tent camp, please share your advice and which items you brought from home that you definitely needed. Thanks! Hobofan |

| I would take an x-pen so she could be safe while you're just sitting around. Others here probably camp regularly, so I'm hoping they chime in. This is something you never want to leave home without: http://www.yorkietalk.com/forums/sic...g-dosages.html

| I remember camping in a tent when I was young. We always had a blast. Sleeping bags, food, bug spray and plenty of water. I would recommend keeping your baby in an ex pen or on a leash at ALL times and never leaving him unsupervised. #1, as you said, something (or someone) could get him and #2, there are going to be lots of temptations out there for him to eat something he shouldn't or chase something into the woods. |

| Personaly i would take a sterdy enclosed crate for her safety. Make sure shes unto date on all her shots. Campground will require her paper work for all her shots so take a copy with you. Blanket, Jacket it tends to get cold at night, extra poopie bags for clean up, in most campgrounds your required to do this. A harness that fits well. I also prefer a retractable leash while camping. If you have one, a stroller. You may want to explore the campground and she may tire out before you get done. Plus you can always stroll her down to the pool and keep an eye on her that way as well. An air tight hard sided food carrier. Pet wipes or baby wipes for quick clean ups she may need. Brushes and combs and baby scissors in case she gets in any brush that has burs on them. This should really be packed in a first aid kit anyways. And just in case, google the local vet in the area in case of an emergency. And I advise you check her for ticks several times a day. Your self too. |

| I would not leave her in the tent while gone either. I don't know what the temps are in FL right now, but a tent can get pretty warm inside with the sun shining. Plus you cann't lock a tent up like a trailer door. You are smart starting her out at her age camping, that way she can learn the manners of camping at an early age. Alot of campgrounds have barking time/or I should say quiet time. Have fun. We're still waiting for nice weather to camp here in Indiana. |

| I live in North Florida (Tallahassee). My vet has pushed me to get the Lepto vaccine if camping. We trailer camp with ours and haven't been getting the Lepto vaccine because of reputation that vaccine has with little dogs. I would definitely put Hobo in something covered if you aren't going to be right there with him. I fear about hawks and owls even at my house in town. Fleas and ticks are out here, so keep an eye out for that for sure. Have fun camping!!

| Thanks to all Thank you for responding and giving me a good idea of things to take!!! We go in mid-May so I should have time to get all of this together. Now if I could just get an extension cord for an air-conditioner... |

Thor's Human Donating Member | I would like to take Thor hiking in Arizona in a few weeks, but I'm concerned about him overheating. Has anyone does this, or taken their yorkie to the Grand Canyon, etc?

| Until a few years ago, we had a second home in Anthem Arizona. The Yorkie handled the heat as long as you do not over do it, or aclimatize them to it. She loved the Swimming Pool, and her own water flotation devices, and a ski board. We took her many times to the Carefree Mountains, but I had to carry her up and down. She used to go on 3 mile walks everyday as long as it was under 85 degrees. Naturally, not in May-Sept. Just have to take it slow, and make sure you have water for them. As far as camping, do not chain the dog to anything and leave it alone, or it will either be eaten, or stolen. Also, have to watch out for Chiggers, ticks, and some spiders that can do a lot of damage if bitten. Also snakes. Keep your food covered, and other common sense things. Make sure they are up to date on all shots. Maxine has a Harley Hat and Sun Goggles for those sunny days! |
