Many puppy mills sell to pet stores, many buy from them to take them home and keep them in terrible conditions just to breed and sell puppies.

I have to agree with what Mary posted. There are several red flags in the add you provided that suggest this breeder may not be very ethical with her practices.

Here are some red flags you want to watch out for while searching
* Dogs not being bred to meet the breed standard. (Which means you have to have a good understanding of what the standar is.)
* Dog that are unregistered
* Breeders who have multiple litters in a very short amount of time
* Advertising dogs as "teacups" or "minatures"
* Breeders using females that are too small (under 5 lbs for breeding)
* Extremely cheap dogs--breeding comes with costs, extreme low prices suggests they are cutting corners somewhere
* Pet store dogs (these are supplied by puppy mills)
* Breeders that do not perform health testing on pups and parents (specific health tests, not just "vet checked")
* Releasing pups at a very young age---6 wks, or 8 wks. For Yorkies, releasing them around 12 weeks is preferred
* Breeders who don't place dogs on spay/neuter agreements
* Not having a sales agreement with health guarantee

I would suggest you take your time and research. Be patient while you search for your little one until you find the perfect furball and an ethical breeder--don't just settle because you are anxious to get one. It's hard thing to do, but well worth it.

You are so right! Pet stores get their puppies from puppy mills... The larger puppy mills don't want to waste their time waiting for buyers... they simply have contracts with pet stores. Do not purchase a puppy or anything for that matter from a pet store that sells puppies. There is nothing kind, compassionate, or ethical about having a puppy in a box. On top of the puppy mills, the never seeing the puppies parents, the living in a cage for who knows how long... pet store puppies are exposed to sooo much. Some stats show percentages as high as 90% of pet store puppies becoming ill with a disease that could be fatal. Parvo is one of the most common diseases at petstores and is very fatal. Some puppies who survive parvo (after thousands of dollars in vet bills) will remain weak for their entire lives. I know it's hard to see a puppy looking so sad behing a glass window... I've thought about holding up the petstore and freeing them all... but pass it up... Good luck finding a good breeder. Do lots of research on the breed standard, what is acceptable and what is not. Research the potential problems that yorkies may face... Buy a book about yorkies and read it from cover to cover. If you buy from a reputable breeder, they will want you to be informed. Breed standard is 5-7lbs... however, you never know what you are going to get. A big yorkie puppy may turn out to be teeny tiny. Alot of puppies do not follow the growth chart. My puppy was the largest of the bunch and at 6 months is weighing 2lbs, 12 oz... her teeny tiny brother is already 4lbs... Going with a reputable breeder will alleviate you worrying about getting a healthy dog as size has nothing to do with that. A reputable breeder will know for sure that their breeding dogs do not carry genetic diseases. Have you researched breeders in your area? If you have I would start interviewing them and seeing if any of them sound like someone you would like to begin a relationship with. Chloe's breeder and I talk almost weekly.

It's me again Hope I'm not getting on your nerves! I went to the Yorkshire Terrier Club of Canada and found this link of breeders in Canada... It is broken up by province??? Sometimes a drive is so worth a healthy, happy pup!

There is no lowest weight or highest weight. Although, the Standards reads not to exceed 7 pounds. You are looking for the healthest dog that is a good representation of the breed.

Keep in mind an advice I give everyone of my potential clients: I don't care if you buy a dog from me. What I do care is that you make your choice doing all the research you can possibly do. Remember all puppies are cute. Buy from a reputable.

You buy your breeder first, then your puppy. It should be a relationship and the deal shouldn't end when you walk away with your puppy. Your breeder should be there for you for the rest of that puppy's life.

I don't like to recommend breeders on an open forum but if you do a google search of yorkshire terrier breeders in Montreal, there is one there that is very reputable in my opinion.

Actually, that is not correct. The breed standard is "not to exceed 7 pounds." There is no 5 lb, or any size, weight minimum.
