Help Please My neighbor found a yorkie this morning cuddled up on her sun porch. The poor girl was starved nearly to death. You can actually see her bones. There was no way I could turn this poor baby away. It literally broke my heart to hold her. I brought her home and gave her a good bath with Yorkie Splash and fed her and put clean towels in a kennel and she is now sleeping like a baby. What else do I need to do for this baby? I will take her to the vet first thing Monday morning. She is eating good and resting well, but is there anything else I need to be doing? |
Oh my gosh, how sweet you are! I think you are doing all that you can. Just continue what you are doing an make her feel safe. How lucky she is that she found you.... |
Sounds to me like you have already thought of everything! Thank goodness she found you! Please keep us posted on her visit. |
I just tried to take her out to go potty, but she already feels safe, so all she wanted to do is to get back in the kennel. She drank all the water I had in there and finished the food, so I know she has a full belly.:) She is safe and warm and hopefully knows that she is loved! |
I'm sure she is getting all she needs right now. Hopefully she will get some strength back tomorrow, and will start to show her yorkie personality. It's nice to know there are people out in this world as caring as you. |
Oh, thank God she found you. Heaven only knows what might have happened to her. She should be fine until a vet sees her on Monday. Bless you for saving her. :) |
That is so sad that all she wants is to get back in where she feels safe...poor little baby. There is no telling what that sweet girl has been through. I just can not imagine one of mine being out there on their own being able to survive for even a few hours. That just breaks my heart. I am so glad she is with you! |
I could way off base here but I see you live in Missouri. Maybe she's a Mill escapee ( starved almost to death ) you say. Just saying. |
Just like to say 'thank you' for taking this little Yorkie in. Blessings. ~Joanne~ |

With that said I also would be very careful about who you turn her over to. I rescue dogs off the streets regularly and while I'm not in the habit of steeling someones pet. If someone said hey that's my dog my response would be something like well do you make it a habit to starve your dog. I would deff be contacting the proper authorities before turning her over to make sure I have done everything I possibly could to keep her safe . Thank you for taking her in. My hope is that you'll make her part of your family.;) Is there a reason it's so far fetched she came from a mill ? |
Honestly, it does not take very long for a yorkie to lose weight and be matted. They are not well suited for survival on the streets. I had a friend whose dog got out one day and was found 50 miles away! Thankfully, he was chipped and the person who found him checked for that. He was in pretty sad shape, but quickly recovered. I would never just keep a found yorkie. First thing I suggest is that you check for a microchip and then check for signs although they do travel. Also check in the newspaper and on CL. Never give any details to anyone regarding the sex and/or markings on a lost pup. Let the owners identify...and with pictures as well! You never know the circumstances! |
Oh my. Thank you so much for taking that poor little girl in and taking such good care of her. You are an angel on earth. Please keep us posted. |
Thanks for taking her in. The only other thing I would suggest doing would be to offer her Pedialyte or Gator Aide, with half the amount of water. If she's dehydrated, this will help to bring her electrolytes back up. If she refuses the mixture, it's okay to give plain water. |
[QUOTE=lillymae;3090130]Don't be offended that was not my intent. It's just when you said she was skin n bones that's where my mind took me as it's not too common for a yorkie to be running the streets long enough to get in that shape. I would think she would have been snatched up by someone before she got in that shape. And you didn't do it to her nor do you run a mill so why would you take that personally. Unless you personally have some kind of control over the mills in your state, my comment was not meant the way you took it.:) With that said I also would be very careful about who you turn her over to. I rescue dogs off the streets regularly and while I'm not in the habit of steeling someones pet. If someone said hey that's my dog my response would be something like well do you make it a habit to starve your dog. My hope is that you'll make her part of your family.;) Is there a reason it's so far fetched she came from a mill ?[/ Thank you for writing back. Sorry about the comment. I was tired and proably just took it wrong. Seems like since I'm from Missouri, "Puppy Mill" always comes up in anything that I write. I hate puppy mills, but they're everywhere and not just in Missouri. I love my home state and I love living here. We have a beautiful state and it's not all about "puppy mills"... Anyway thanks for clarifying what you were saying. After reading your comment, I kinda wondered if maybe that was the case, but I've lived here in this town all my life and have never heard of a puppy mill being here, but it may be possible. :( She acts like she has been homed though. She is very behaved, which could contribute to being starved. She may not have the energy to get rowdy yet...:) She is eating very good this morning and has went to the bathroom well..:( Had to mop already, but it was worth it to know that she was well fed and was drinking good. Thanks again for the advice and I will deff. not let her just go to anyone. I hope and pray to have her back up again running and playing like she hopefully once did! Say a prayer for her please!:animal36 |

I'm taking her to the vet tomorrow to have her checked out and checked for a chip. If this was my Mia I would want them to do the same thing. I hope she has a owner somewhere that wants her back.. :) It is a very sad situation! |
Please keep us posted...thank you for taking her in. I'm sure she knows she's in good hands. |
Just came to check for an update! How's she doing?? How'd it go at the vet's?? |
4 Attachment(s) I went to a store, which had a flyer of a lost Yorkie. I called the number and an older lady answered and I ask her to describe her dog. She described the Yorkie that I had and said hers had been gone for about two months, so I let her come to my house to look at her. Sadly it wasn't her baby and i felt so sorry for this lady that I ask her if she would like to take the lost baby home with her. She said she would take her to the vet this morning and that she would take very good care of her. I do believe with all my heart that this lady needed this poor baby as bad as the baby needed her. It was a difficult decission, but I already have two babies in my house and with me working all day, I felt she would be better with this very nice lady. I have checked on her today and she said she is doing well and vet visit was good, but no chip..:( ... I will continue to check on her daily until I feel I don't need to anymore. I've always thought that my two babies were the luckiest furbabies in the world until I found this baby and now I know she is the luckiest furbaby in the world. I truely believe God put me where i needed to be Saturday night so I could save her... :) thanks for all the concern and help! I'm posting some pics we took of her so you can see who we have been praying for... :) |

Just saw this post. Do you know if she was sprayed? Was going to offer to go get her. I'm in Ks. |
No disrespect, but I am honestly stunned that you just gave her to the first person who happened along. You said you would look for her owner and talked about how you would feel if she were yours. So sad. I really hope and pray she is ok. |

I honestly felt like I did the right thing. This lady knew more about Yorkies than I did after having mine for over two years. I did check on her and she is doing good. My first concern is to make sure she gets well and is taken care of the way she needs it. Like I said earlier, I work all day and i didn't want to kennel her the entire time so I let someone have her that could be with her all day. Futhermore, I know our babies can get lost, but mine is never out of my site. She is like my child and I make sure she is safe at all times, so this isn't likely going to happen to me, but if it did, I would want her safe, loved, and all the medical attention she needed and this lady has done this today. I feel like this dog was severly abused, neglected, or even abandoned, or even may have escaped from her abuser, so please don't judege me for what I have done. I feel like I have saved this poor baby and I have no regrets! |
I love all three of mine too but just a couple of weeks ago they got out of the yard. They were not gone long maybe 45 minutes tops. By the time I found them they looked like orphans. Did you try contacting the local animal control to see if anyone was missing a pet? |

I am just confused because of the conflicting statements I guess. First you said this: Quote:

I believe that you should call your local animal control people and report this. Someone very well could be looking for this darling pup. Someone asked if she has been spayed.....excellent question that I am quite sure you cannot answer. So, ask yourself this, "Do you know for a fact that the woman who has her is not affiliated with a puppy mill or byb?" Did you call her vet to see if she indeed did take this yorkie there? Did you ask her for her vet information or just believe what she told you? I am not trying to give you a difficult time....trying to wake you up a bit to the fact that this may not have been a good move for this yorkie. |

I can't believe you people! I came on here to get support and you have totally crucified me. You act like I have harmed this dog, when all I did was try to save it. I brought her into my home, possibly exposing any diseases she might have had to my own dogs, because I had a big enough heart to take her in and feed, bath, and keep her safe until I could re-home her. This women I gave her to is NOT a monster or a byb or owner of a puppy mill. After I called this woman and talked to her in my home, I knew her family. Like I said in an earlier post, this is a small town (population 2000), and I am a school nurse at the school and I know everyone. I have lived here my entire life and am well respected. When this lady came to my house I questioned her just as you are questioning me. I WOULD NOT have put this dog in any harm whatsoever. I HAVE checked with her and she did take the dog to the vet and the vet said she had been spayed. I just called the vet, who happens to be my vet and he confirmed she had brought her in. He also told me she had brought in flyers, in case someone came in and may possibly know the dog. Her goal first and foremost was to make sure she was ok and to start her on Nutrical and then to try and find the owner. You have no right to Judge when you no nothing about the entire situation and seen the dog for yourself. I’m done with this and will no longer comment further. With advice like yours, I don’t need anymore! |

Clearly you DID need our advice if you had to do all of these things today, after the fact!. I am glad to hear that at least it is being checked on...and done. As for you taking one in with your pups....I do that ALL of the time and still do not just give them to the first person who comes along. I spend time looking for their owners! That IS what you suggested from the beginning is it not? We were all simply shocked by your abrupt turn around. Trust me, if you had told us from day one that you were just going to give her to someone, people would have suggested otherwise! You were given advice from people who know about these things...that is ALL...no one crucified you. |
