Animal control, but if I had done that, she would've been put to sleep that day due to her being so starved. I know that for sure. I've lived here my entire life in the same town and have a respected reputation. I work in the school system as a school nurse. I take care of sick children everyday and I love my job. Some people here on this forum have made me look like the bad person here for not doing things exactly the way they would've done it. I'm not an expert when it comes to taking care of sick dogs, but I promise you, I love them with all my heart and soul and NEVER would harm them in any way. I did what i thought was best and I have no regrets at all. I also don't know the legal aspects of this, but it wasn't about what was legal at the time,it was saving her life and that's what was more important to me... |
So glad she is improving and I think this thread should stay open as most of us would like to know what happens to her and how her health improves. |
I'm thankful to you for rescuing that little yorkie! You did what you felt was best for her and should be commended for that, rather than attacked with hateful and venomous statements. All you have to do is look around at other threads and you'll find the same thing happening to others, so please don't take it personal. It seems to be how they get their jollies. I'm so glad that yorkie is in good hands and getting the love she deserves. |

We found Fizz running loose on a busy street. Spent the next few weeks looking for an owner...He had no collar and no chip. ( I had him checked for a chip by Our Animal resource Center, Our Humane Society, My Vet, And SICSA...just to be safe:) Had the Vet check him out and put him on antibiotics. $200.00 and the dog was not mine. Spent the next weeks looking at every lost dog thing there was on line, in pet stores, in the Vet clinincs...My vet even put out calls to the vet clinics in the area for me:) I really like my vet. Many calls later to the Animal resourse center and other rescue palces. No one even came forward. Called our county shelter and they have a three day turn around for dogs without tags ans microchip, then the dog is up for adoption. ....we waited three weeks...Finally decided it was time he knew he had a long term loving family whose other dog really likes him. So now I just want to treat him right in every way, he is now tagged and microchipped and loved a ton.:) If my situation had been like mommaofmia I would have done things similar too!!! Every situation is different, and we shoud all be glad this little one is being loved!! and cared for. |
There are legal steps the one is required to obey if they find a dog? I've never seen a state statue that outlines anything to this nature. I'd love to see a state law that deals with this. Please post one if there is actually one. Unfortunately I don't believe there is a statue. And if there is - which I highly doubt (unfortunately) how many people aware of it and how often is it adhered to?[/QUOT] Each state is different as far as what the time limit is. However the laws are there for lost and found property and pets fall under the catagory of property so those laws apply to pets. What is wrong with quot and why is it not highlited ? |
Yikes! Judgemental and arrogant are two words that come to mind! The OP stated that she personally did not have time to investigate about the previous owner or if the dog had been chipped She met a woman, whom she knew the family of. This kind, older woman who had experience with Yorkies and had the TIME to vet this poor, starving pup was checking to see if there was an owner anywhere in the picture. WHAT IS THE #@%^&%# PROBLEM???? I guess I'm not the only one who needs to vent LOL. To the OP, I have dared to post an innocent question months ago and also got attacked by some-know-it-alls. Guess we can't all be perfect like some people. I am thankful that there are people like you who truly care about the well-being of sick animals. To anyone who just wants to be rude to pass the time, get a life!:D |

Florida Lost Property Statutes |
Wow! I've just recently returned to this site after being 'away' from it for a couple of years. I doubt that I will ask any questions, but will read only. I can't believe the slamming against MommaofMia. Whether you agree or disagree on how she handled things, the important thing at the moment is that the Yorkie is being brought back to health and loved. Efforts have been made to find the owner. What else can she do. Why are such a few allowed to stir up the post by being rude and ignorant. MommaofMia, I know how words can hurt - please know that there are MORE of us out there that commend you for what you did. Thank you for caring. Judy |

Exactly. The proof is in the add you place in the paper. |
It sickens me that a living breathing being is considered Property but unfortunately that's how it is. And this is why I posted the onfo in the 1st place as MOST people do not know this and that's how the trouble starts. Simply trying to educate more people. Not bashing anyone. |

I am also from MO & it is a beautiful state to live in! All states have mills, but everyone thinks that if you are from MO, you got your dog from a puppy mill! Gets me very mad for people to assume this! I try to jump back in to catch up on things here, but - the reason I stay away is all this drama, people being rude, etc...... Judy-Thanks for being so kind in your comments to MommaofMia..I am with you on this! |
I think some of you need to understand that just because you find a dog, it doesn't mean it's yours, you can give it to a shelter or rescue, but they don't adopt it out, until they make every effort to find the owner. It was very kind of mommaofmia to take the dog in, but "giving" it to a private person, is what some people think is wrong. I would just die if this happened to my Joey. I hope the new guardian is making every effort to find the original owner. Granted many states don't have rescues, so it's okay for a private individual to keep the dog until a suitable foster mother is found. It's not clear how well mommaofmia knew the new foster mother, and that's what some people are upset about. I would recommend taking a found dog to a vet and scanning for a microchip before I placed the dog with anyone, even a foster home. The breeder should have some type of record where the dog went, and if this is an AKC breeder, the AKC often keeps records of microchip numbers. It just breaks my heart that this could be someone's loving pet, and people are thinking it was abused just because it looks ungroomed. I really hope every effort is being made to find the true owner. By the way, there are lots of online sites to list lost dogs, including the AKC. I hope this thread becomes more about finding the owner than placing blame on who did what and who said what. Mommaofmia did the best she could with the information she had, but now she has learned that there may have been a better way to have handled the situation, and I hope she and others will learn from this thread. |
Just reading the latest posts and thank you all for the nice words.. I know there are some that don't believe I did the right thing and there's nothing I can say or do to change this situation. I did what was best at the time to make sure she was taken care of and she has been. A chip was found, the breeder notified and nobody to this day has claimed her.:( I know in my heart, even after this much time has passed since I met this baby, this lady I gave her to, would still give her back. She herself had lost her own baby and knows how it feels to have lost something precious to her. To Nancy, I have learned from this and unfortunately the one big thing I would do different is not post on YT. It doesn't matter if I'm not perfect and didn't do everything like some people thought I should have, its that I saved this baby wheather I had her for one minute or forever. People shouldn't treat other people on here so rudely. I notifed Administration about this and ask her if she felt I done anything wrong to please close this post, but never heard back from them. I didn't come here to get bashed, but to get support from other animal lovers. I thought that was what YT was all about. I understand, that I opened myself up for negative comments as soon as I posted, so I won't make that same mistake again. I haven't been here much in the last year, but it's because I've always felt like, because I was from Missouri, I wasn't liked much. My baby didn't come from a puppy mill and I am against them as much as onyone on here and I've learned a lot about this and I have tried to educate people about them in my area and at my place of work. The humane society here in our area is trying to get a bill passed to outlaw puppy mills and we are confident it will happen. There has been door to door signatures signed to get this passed and hopefully it will be passed.. :) I guess what i'm tring to get at, is that just because I'm from Missouri or other people here at Yt are from Missouri doesn't mean we support puppy mills and would appreciate if nobody judged us accordingly....:animal36 Anyway....... On a happy note, she continues to get better and she is still gaining weight and happy, which is all I wanted in the first place......:) |

I wish you wouldn't read our posts so harshly, I truly believe you did what you thought was the right thing, and you are so lucky an honest lady took the dog, because she sounds like she is still trying to find the owner. I would just pray that whoever found Joey would do everything they could think of to find me before giving up. I'm so glad she is with a loving owner, and perhaps this is for the best, it's just we are recommending that if someone finds a dog, and can't foster it themselves then to make sure that the new person is responsible, and will try to find the owner. It just wasn't clear in the beginning that you did this, but as more facts came out, it sounds like you did do this. This thread shouldn't make you sad, many people have learned something, we all are constantly learning things while we are here, and we all make mistakes, but no one is crucifying you, they're just saying there may have been a better way to do this. If you lost one of your dogs, wouldn't you want the person to do everything in their power to find you? The important thing is you took in the dog, so it didn't get hit by a car or starve to death, or be taken by an abusive pet owner, and you did find a good foster home for it, we know that now. Don't worry, every state has puppy mills and many people have even purchased dogs from puppy mills before they understood the problem. No one is blaming the people of Missouri for causing the problem; it's a nationwide problem. I'm so glad you are doing what you can to help solve the puppy mill crisis, and I'm really glad someone took the poor little girl in and she's doing well now. I guess if I lost Joey, at least I would want a loving person to find him. Here's more information about the AKC recovery program, and perhaps they can work with the breeder to help find the dog's owner. Maybe they will have more clout. She really should know the name of the owner. Do you have the microchip number? I would like to know the name of the breeder who doesn't keep track of the owners of her dogs. AKC microchip - companion animal recovery program |
well...if my babies were to be lost (heaven forbid), I would rather that someone like you (momma) took them in while trying to find me and treated them nicely than take them somewhere that they might be injured or treated poorly. As mentioned, the important thing is that this baby was saved from almost certain death. Everything else is just small details. Oh, and to you negative people...middle school called, they want their drama back ;) |
If you look back over the very first posts, YHR offered to take this pup and it was NEVER in danger of being PTS in a shelter. We were never even given a chance. Instead *I* am not feeling attacked. :( |

Everything else isn't "small details", the others were urging her to find the original owner. How is this a small detail? I'm not drama queen, I can assure you of that, but this is really an important point, and your post sounds like it's a "mute" point and people are just posting this to create drama. We have so many threads where people are frantic trying to find their dogs, so far none have responded to this thread, but I can assure you if they did, you would see plenty of drama. |

Right around the time this pup was found was when all 3 of mine got out of the yard. They were only gone a very short time and looked like orphans. The OPer said in the very beginning the pup seemed lost and then it turned into she was abused. Now she is saying that she lodged a complaint! Maybe some of the members posting on this thread should take a look at Roriee and all that YHR has done for her in the past few day. We are only trying to help but then are taken wrong and the attacks begin  |

actually, you weren't the one I was thinking of when I said drama...please know it was others. It really is small, when you think about it. From the start, the OP has mentioned wanting to find the original owners, but has had no luck. Honestly, she has put a LOT more time and effort into it than a lot of people would. Isn't it nice that she's being honest and trying to do the right thing? a LOT of people these days would just keep the dog if they wanted it - especially being a small, in-demand breed. As long as this little one has a loving home where she's able to be brought back to health, and the OP is doing everything in her power to find the original owners, everything else is small detail. I am not trying to create drama, I just find it absolutely ridiculous the way that some grown men and women behave - the sense of entitlement to say "you're wrong" to an opinion, the way that people are spoken down to, the extreme lack of respect going on here...that's what I'm talking about. Again, I do not mean you. When it comes down to it, all feelings and opinions aside, isn't it wonderful that this dog has been given another chance at life? |
Quote:
pardon me, but how do the "mean and childish" posts tie in with being taken to a shelter? I really don't understand - maybe I missed a post or 2. Being offered a no kill shelter doesn't give one the excuse to be rude, anyways. Also, I feel sorry that your dogs got out, and probably looked "like orphans". However...a dog does NOT become emaciated overnight, and I quote from the OP's first post, "The poor girl was starved nearly to death". I believe this pup's situation was different from your 3, and I am VERY glad that you got all 3 back quickly. |

What is interesting to me is how nobody has question the owner.. I mean if I lost my dog i would put up flier\'s everywhere, and in a small town that would be so easy to do. Why hasn\'t the owner of this dog put an ad in the paper, and called the vets? SOunds like an irresponsible owner to me.. You didn\'t have to take that dog in, I think what you have done should be commended, not condemned. |
