Call me naive....but why is it dangerous for the dogs to engage even though there is no chance of pregnancy??? I am not being funny or anything, I just truly don't know. My male yorkie (neutered) never got down to business and my Trixie won't either.

I'm hoping BamaFan comes back to elaborate. I know it's a bad idea, I just don't know all the "whys." Kaji tried to "get down to business" at a meetup this weekend, and every time he got that look in his eye, a quick no pretty much snapped him out of it. He's been neutered for 8 months now. Other than STD's I don't know what all the harms are of allowing neutered animals to have sex, but I would really like to know.

From my understanding they can break their wee wee. I know the female controls when he can release. But, I thought this was just when a female was in heat. I am not sure what they can do. I have never seen a neutered dog go all the way. Just the normal humping of the leg which is very normal.

Kaji kept following a pretty little yorkie girl that I believe was in heat. He was very much interested in going all the way. Mr Peeper was out and everything. As long as he has been with me, he has not been allowed to fulfill his desire to do the deed. (Tried twice)
I thought it was the boy who locked with the female?? They have these things that swell around the base of his peeper. Can you tell I would not be a great breeder? My terminology is childish at best!

Both the male and female could be hurt... it may be a natural "urge" for dogs but so is jotting in front of cars, eating chocolate, and running away from home... yet responsible owners prevent their dogs from doing these things in order to protect them.

i dunno....i've been "fixed" - because i had a c section, 1 girl, and 1 boy - so i figured, "hey, while you're in there..."

anyway, i don't see much difference - men and women get fixed and still do the deed all the time. why would dogs be any different as far as desire to do it?

i don't think the OP said anything wrong or was irresponsible because her neutered dog got frisky - good lord.

Yes, the male swells up. I watched 2 akitas mate one time and it scared me to death. The guy told me that the female controls when the male releases. But, I have no clue. I am about like you and know nothing about breeding. haha

Dogs and people, totally different.
When a male is "fixed", his testicles are completely removed, they don't have the hormones anymore which make the penis erect, do that to a man and he will not have an erection.. PERIOD..

When they spay a female, ALL of her female organs are removed. ovaries, uterus, etc. So there is also not hormones pumping through her body and no desire to mate. Dogs mate for offspring ONLY, not for the desire to have sex like humans.

I am in awe of the fact you don't know the basics of biology..
