1. Lay down some old blankets in the family room for potty training sessions. It saves the carpet. Also, they can wash out the pee odor after accidents which aids in potty training.

2. Ask them to get an expen and a linoleum remnant from Home depot to put under the expen. Keep the expen inside so the puppy remains part of the family. I bought a couple small throw rugs (like for the bathroom) so there was something soft to lay on. I just exchanged them and washed every evening.

I understand that a puppy is a lot of work and can be very overwhelming for new owners. Their world is upside down right now. Please let them know that its okay to put the puppy in the expen for small periods of time so that they can get some relief. But its also important to spend a good amount time potty training and socializing so that the puppy can become part of the family as soon as possible.
If she is concerned about the smell in the laundry room, then I am guessing none of those suggestions will work.

People who do not like the smell of dogs should not own dogs. How is that poor little thing even going to get trained if he is penned in the garage.

I really hope the OP is able to buy him.

Oh no, this makes me sad. Poor pup, alone in the garage. Personally I really don't think Yorkies smell. My Lily doesn't smell much at all. So I really don't get it (not that any dog should be left alone in the garage no matter how they smell...). Yorkies also need a lot of training and socializing, and these owners are sure to get a dog with serious behavior problems if they don't do that. At least that is my experience with my yorkie. I spend a lot of time training it, really, a lot! Yorkies are very small, but they sure are terriers in every way! I hope these owners see reason before it has gone too far and they have a nervous, aggressive wreck in that garage!

I asked if it was a yorkie and of course it was i asked how old and she said 6 weeks she just picked it up that day. I could not believe it this dog was so small and already going to a new home.

Seems they just wanted a Yorkshire Terrier because they wanted to show off by claiming they own one. People like this are disgusting. They only want things to flaunt and brag about when it's something they know most other people will not spend money on. A status symbol pet. Now they are upset because they actually have to train it and care for it. They don't deserve this baby.
These comments seem judgmental and uncalled for?

When I got Bailey - I was completely overwhelmed and no doubt these people are overwhelmed too. Its very difficult for new pet owners to fully understand the impact these puppies have on their life. Reading books is no comparison to the constant work and worry of raising a puppy. Most people on this site are veteran yorkie owners who can't understand what newbie pet owners go through.

So, instead of judging and critizing these people - lets help them over the puppy hump. Once the puppy learns basic house manners - it will become part of the family. Help the pet owners help the yorkie!!!

My yorkie doesn't smell. Just offering some useful suggestions on how to keep puppy areas clean so the new owners don't have to put it in the garage. What are you suggestions?

I think the op posted because she was frustrated, and the ones that responded are frustrated along with her. I agree, when your first pup (no matter the age) comes along it's overwhelming. I felt that way, and mine came pre-trained and pre-spoiled. But when you truly desire to have something you keep at it, especially when something is a living, breathing creature like any pet. The solution isn't giving up and sticking it in the garage like someone would when they give up on guitar lessons. I'll admit that at times Kaji smelled horrible as he would just pee in his belly band and get it all over his belly. I had much work to do to get Kaji's excited peeing under control. Sticking a pup outside of the family area isn't going to help it, they're ignoring her. The OP did her best to help them make good, responsible decisions when it comes to dog ownership, which they clearly ignored. I do hope the OP's co-worker realizes what she's doing is helping the newest addition to her family. I hope they choose to either put in the work, or let her go to someone that doesn't mind the work of raising a pup and the extra work of raising one that was taken from her mother to soon.

Yep, I agree the solution is not to give up and certainly do not put the puppy in the garage. The OP said they love the puppy. Its only been a week - so lets give the new owners some suggestions to help them overcome their challenges and give them a chance to adjust.

There are other solutions to putting the puppy in the garage and/or re-homing it.

I suppose if they will not let you have the dog, you could offer to take the poor baby and train it. I know it would be hard for you to give it back, but atleast the little sweetie would not be in the garage alone. It is too cool at night in S IL to be in the garage.

Actually, I think for the puppy owners to give up the pup to the OP is the best solution. They were "educated" in the ways of the yorkie and still made, and continue to make poor decisions. I honestly think that the people, while overwhelmed, don't really "love" their pup. They love the idea of having a purebred dog, but real love is different. Funny how I just had the same discussion with my dad. Real love is when you have a person/pet's best interest in mind, even if it means giving some of yourself, or giving in in order to achieve what's best. The pup is young, and the best is still to come. The pup is only roughly 9 weeks old. Wait until the biting, the potty training, switching to solid food, and other stuff that goes along with having a young puppy start, they might decide they love her, but not love her enough to "put up" with those behaviors.

The problem is that by putting this 9 week old puppy in the garage it won't become the dog it could be. I have given suggestion after suggestion about potty training. I invited her and her husband to join yorkietalk..and then to say the puppy is going into the garage b/c you don't like the smell...idk it kind of stumped me. what 9 week old dog do you know that is potty trained. and yes i am aware how hard it is to train a puppy..i have a puppy mill rescue..try unteaching bad habits...it is even worse and that poor puppy is going to have an even worse time when it is older. it will be unsocialized and i know how difficult that is. i mean 10 months late and we are still working with Sophie constantly. I want to help them...that's why I asked for everyone's advice. this wasn't meant to be critical. i just want to help...what do you suggest?

They are not judgemental because some people do get Yorkies for a status symbol and then treat them badly when they realize that having a Yorkie puppy is REAL LIFE WORK!!! It's very selfish to think a puppy has to fit into someones life without rocking the boat...having peeing and pooping accidents because of not being trained. I don't buy into the being overwelmed attitude for EVERY new puppy owner. Pets aren't for everyone and some people need to face that fact.

She'll die in a garage - it's too hot and there is not enough air...that's my opinion anyway. They sound wreckless and it infuriates me. Good for you for reacting violently. Some people are just clueless.

Ask her if she would like to be locked up with no air...if you are not willing to clean up after a puppy then DO NOT GET ONE!

ask her this actually...if she had a baby (i pray she doesnt at this rate!) would she lock the baby in the garage all day, ALONE, because it messed itself? they are BABIES, animal or human it's the same issue and they deserve only the best love, care and attention. It's irresponsible, and I feel that if she does in fact do this you should call your local SPCA or Naimal Welfare and have the dog removed.

Im enraged for you...don't let this slide.
