Yep, I agree the solution is not to give up and certainly do not put the puppy in the garage. The OP said they love the puppy. Its only been a week - so lets give the new owners some suggestions to help them overcome their challenges and give them a chance to adjust.
There are other solutions to putting the puppy in the garage and/or re-homing it.
