Default Is your dog tatooed?

With the hot conversation being collar - no collar lately I am wondering if anyone has had their dog tatooed. One of our vets tried it on his dog but it came off. Evidently he did it wrong and didn't go deep enough?
Where would you put a tatoo? Inside the thigh or ear?
Does anyone have an opinion on this practice?

I know microchips are the way to go but Adie's came out!

Why no collar? All of my dogs have collars with tags and microchipped and I have never had a problem except one migrated. I have never heard of a chip coming out, I don't even think it is possible, except if it came out right after insertion thats why they hold the are closed for a couple minutes.

BUT they can migrate and it could of moved to any part of her body. So i would have her scanned from head to toe, every inch.. And if its in an area where it would be hard to find then I would have another one put in and use the Home again ones, they don't migrate..

Anyhow, all I can really tell you about tattooing is it has to be done by someone who knows how to do it right and has done it a bunch of times. And it should be done in the ear where it can be found easily.

Tattooing is painful to the dog and i personally do not think it's worth doing. Not now with having chips.

Couldn't imagine ink (or whatever it is) on my girl, but that's just me.

No, I wouldn't do it to myself so I wouldn't do it to my dog.

Tattooing used to be the way for "permanent" ID'ing an animal. But it's a bit disfiguring.

It's done under anesthesia; ears have been done, but then they've also been loped off to hide the number. The inside of the thigh is another choice place, because most thieves won't cut off a leg to hide the number. Another common place is inside the lip.

Personally, I'd rather risk losing my dog than tattooing them. That's me. They wear collars for tags, and halters for walks. They're also chipped.

A chip that's been inappropriately injected can migrate, but I can't imagine how it could come out. Has your dog been scanned "all over" for it? Another possibility is that it was defective, but they should have scanned for it immediately to make sure (my vet scanned before it was injected). If the chip has migrated, I think I'd have another one installed in the proper location (between the shoulder blades) - where people would look for it. Keep the other chip's number and where it's migrated to ... it can be an "ace in the hole" if you can tell them where the second chip is should the occasion arise.

No collars because of the choking hazard (and please, that is a whole other discussion.)
Yes Adie's chip came out. And yes, I had her scanned from head to toe. I don't know "when" it came out. It could have been shortly after it was placed but I can't say for sure. I need to get another one put in. I haven't even considered having my little ones tatooed. I was just curious if anyone else had. I can imagine that it is a painful process!

No, I would never tattoo my dog. He's microchipped and wears collar for ID.

AKC required all breeders permanently ID their dogs. Prior to microchipping (which is now the AKC's preferred method), tattoing was the only way this could be accomplished.....The down side is that it would, with time become disfigured, so it had to be redone.

Default I do my own !!!!

I have a small tatoo set that I use to tatto my puppies prior to selling them. I just tatoo 1 number such as 1,2,3, etc I only do one ear and it has never had to be re-done. All of my adults are tatooed. the set cost $25.00-$30.00 and uses black ink. I don't think it hurts any more than a microchip because I only do 1 number.

Do also do tails and dew claws yourself?

Since I show dogs, I guess the ear wouldn't be an option for me then.....I've seen them on the underbelly....but, since AKC is now requiring microchip...I have no other option but, to comply with them.

I do all my tails and dew claws....I've been taught by a vet and my mentor, at my vet's recommendation....that way I don't have to expose them to what is at the vet's office - since it's done between 3 & 5 days.

Radar has a tattoo on his belly and his breeders did it and I've had him awhile now and so far it's still readable.
I still need to get my dogs chipped YIKES! Brookie will be chipped when she goes in for a teeth cleaning next week
No collars in my house only a harness when we are in public or on walks...

One of my Biewers from Germany has a tatoo in the ears. I truthfully don't like it--and it certainly would be of no help here in the U.S. because I don't think there is a registry for tatoos in Germany--the microchip is a better idea, imho.

This is truly an interesting subject to me. I still don't intend to tattoo my dogs but I see an advantage to it. Let's say the dog gets out and someone finds it and runs an ad in the Lost and Found. I can see how simple it would be to describe the dog and the tattoo to quickly prove ownership. You can't argue with that!

Thanks for the information.
