| ![]() Yes, but if a dog is microchiped....the dog can be taken to a vet, shelter and have the chip read. The owner should have the information in their possession.

Radar is from a Canadian breeder, it's my understanding that tattoing is still common practice in Canada.

Mary, I should talk to you more about this.. This is something I did not know.. Although my Rainbow IS already microchipped (she is the Mom of Sonny) Sonny is NOT yet microchipped... what is the best age to get it done?? Also does it need to be done prior to showing?? or only prior to breeding (IF he is bred)

Other than the usual that has to be done prior to breeding, you will need to have him DNA'd Oh have been studying on your pedigree.

BTW.. I ordered the Breeders Standard and got all of my dogs info in it. and as much of thier pedigrees into it as I have info on. Have been trying to play around with it a little each day. I also ordered (and received) 2 of the videos from the yorkie club website (Best in Show and Show Preparation) Great training videos!

| ![]() All of my dogs are microchipped now but years ago tattooing was the way to permanently ID a dog with the AKC. When tattooing it is usually done on the inside of a thigh or ear. I personally would go with inside the thigh and had it done by the vet. I much prefer microchips. |

| ![]() Racing greyhounds are all tattooed. So I have 4 ex-racers and they all have tatts. Most are not legible at this stage in their lives. And believe me they are done right and with a lot of knowledge. So with it not being a permanent thing, **again still there but all numbers are not legible**and are in both ears** I would go a different route.

| ![]() I thought that one of the reasons that microchipping became more popular was because unethical breeders and thieves could have a tattoo altered? I had my Raley chipped last month. He didn't even wimper....he has the ResQ chip. He wears a collar (with his rabies/ID tag) only when we are in a public place but of course he uses a harness as well because he is always leashed in public.

YT Addict | ![]() I been thinking about this for while now I want to ID my dogs but I read a story about microchip causing cancer and my friends dog has it and I feel it in her neck it's really gross. My dogs are so small I don't like putting collars on them and if they are stolen collars can be removed. Been thinking about a tattoo there are no side effects I think it's a good idea nothing wrong with it as long they get put under to get it done might get it done when my little girl gets her teeth cleaned. |

| ![]() It's compulsary to have your dog tattooed here. When we picked up Sandy, he's already tattooed. Microchip is however optional but Sandy is microchipped because we travel with him outside the country quite often. |

| ![]() I have a friend that took in a cat that was left behind when the owners moved away. She took it to the Vet and she had a tattoo on her belly. That vet did not know how to go about reading the tattoo to see who owned the cat. They did scan the cat for a chip. Makes me wonder how many other vets don't know what to do with a tattoo on an animal that is lost?
