Yes, I have considered rehoming my baby. It's so sad..

I'm so sorry this is happening to your Mushu and you. You mention you will be seeing the vet. I assume your mother will drive you. Why not contact your vet ahead of your appointment and discuss this with him/her and get the vets feelings. He may be able to work proper potty training into the conversation and educate your mom without her even knowing it was a put up job. I would also work like crazy with Mushu whenever you can or it may come to the point where he will pee out of fear when he sees her coming. Good Luck to you sweetie.

It breaks my heart that your Mom is treating him this way. I remember when I was house breaking my sons golden retriever layla when he was in college. It was the weekend and my son and his fiance were home and they were watching layla and she had an accident and my Son's fiance slapped her on the nose........... Well I flipped out on her and told her I don't handle animals that way and in my house she better never do that again!! Well it was a big argument but I was going to be dammed if she was going treat Layla that way.

Now my Son are her are no longer together (not bc of that) but I am glad bc I use to worry about layla.

Since it is your Mom and her house it is hard. Honestly though if you can't get through to her on this it is only fair to rehome him bc of the abuse. They put children in foster homes when their parents abuse them. Why not Puppies they don't understand and it is not fair. You need to think about what is best for your lil one. Good luck

I think your mom is not trying to be mean to your dog. She probably is getting frustrated with him because she just doesn't know how to potty train him. She might even think shes training him correctly and youre the one who is not helping train him. I know, hard to see that way.

I'd suggest either watching some videos together or reading some books together.

When we first got Kona and he was having issues with barking, it would drive me nuts. I didn't know how to handle him or train him to be better. We even had dog trainers come by to help us. Then my husband got us some books and turned me on to some videos that gave me better tools. So I wasn't so frustrated and our dog got trained.

Here are some of the tv shows, videos, books, and magazines that we got that really helped us have more tools and gave us a really good dog:

Tv - Dog Whisperer, it's me or the dog
Magazines - Yorkshire terrier puppies (at petco)
Books - house train your dog in 7 days, all caesar millan's books, monks of new skeet, books by Ian dunbar
Videos - caesar millan's training videos ordered from his website

As you can tell, we meant business with trying to have a dog that we can live with and enjoy. It's been the best having him.

Ok so good news!

This morning I nicely asked my mom if we could try a different way of training, considering we haven't gotten anywhere. I just told her to not worry about the puppy, as I will handle him. She agreed!! He hasn't had an accident all day! I know one day isn't much, but i'm still so excited!

I want to thank everybody who replied to this thread. After reading all the posts, I dug up the courage to request a different approach on training.
Can't thank you guys enough!!

You go girl ! I was really hoping you could get through to her as it's obvious how much you love him and was so hoping it didn't come to re-homing since it was suggested as a last resort ....this whole thread shows your maturity on many levels.

I am so sorry for you,but that is animal abuse.i would think about rehoming him it's not fair to him,the reason i say this is ,i just got a little one who is all most 6mts,i think he has been hit because when he pees he will hide in the corner i just pick him up and love him ,because one day i know he will be potty trained,but it breaks my heart to see that scared look on his face ,so when he pees on my floor i pick him up and on the way to his pee-pad i love on him.Don't make him scared to use the bathroom because it's sad out come.Good luck

That is great news. My biggest concern would be that as the puppy gets older it will not want to be social with your Mom. Does your Mom show the animal affection and love?

Do your best to hold up your end of the bargain with your Mom.

If not caught IN the act the dog doesn't even know why he is being ABUSED. Her attitude is very old school. Most of us back in the 50's thought this was actually something that worked, but it DOESN'T.

Maybe a bellyband, if he still has accidents would be a safer alternative. Neutering may help some. Also, restrict his freedom in the house until he's fully trained. One room lined with peepads, or an ex-pen. Very glad your Mom agreed to reevaluating her methods. Also, explain that Yorkies are really a different breed and learn only through positive reinforcement. They really don't get any negative reaction, just develope fear about it.

Also, use an enzematic cleaner on the accidents so he won't resoil, like Nature's Miracle.

Hi there, first I want to send you a big hug, I can feel your love for precious Mushu, also you are a very caring young lady, your Mom is so blessed to have a 15 year old such as yourself.
I am happy you found the Yorkie Talk site, lots of support and caring folks here.
Glad to hear your Mom and you are on the road to working together in training precious Mushu.
Please don't give into rehoming Mushu, I can feel the need in your life to have him with you. I truely believe it will all work out.
Hitting is a real no, no, I pray that your Mom has come to realize this already. I hope real soon that your Mom will feel the over powering of love for Mushu such as you do.
