Puppy pads....getting expense..any other ideas?

If they are good about going on the pads and only the pads you should be alright with two a day. I wash ours every other day so I would recommend 6-8 pads. I would also suggest that even if you are switching to washables you need to keep disposable ones on hand just in case one of them gets the runs. It would save a lot of work!

The pads I sell are made with 100% brushed poly. As Dana stated above, its best to wash them once before using them and never use fabric softener.

Since someone PM'd me to follow up on some of my care tips for washable pee pads, I thought I'd share here too. Before going into my cleaning methods, I'll openly admit that I stopped using chemicals nearly two years ago and my house is cleaner than it has ever been and I breathe a lot easier. I also feel it is safer around my animals. But whether or not you want to use chemicals and become a green cleaner, this is a cheap alternative to consider.

I realized I had a typo in my earlier post -- I do a 1/3 white distilled vinegar to 2/3 water solution in a 32 oz spray bottle. I add about 10 drops of essential oil of lavender to my bottle. When the s have soiled their pee pee pad, I take the pad and spritz it with my solution and store it in a pail until I am ready to wash. The vinegar helps to neutralize the odors of urine.

The vinegar solution can smell strong when wet but in my opinion it beats the stink of urine. It's safe on fabrics and is natural so you and your furbabies will not be breathing in caustic chemicals.

If you have already chemically "set" your urine into your washable pee pads and you're picking up any urine smell, my suggestion is to soak the pads in a vinegar and water solution in your tub or large basin with 2 cups of baking soda and then do a regular wash. This will help to get some of the urine out of the fabric. Add vinegar to your rinse cycle and add a 2nd rinse. This should make your fabrics come out smelling brand new.

I will disclaim this and say that it works for us on our pee pads that T. Bumpkins & Co. makes using 100% cotton toppers. I think this method would be fine using fabrics that are cotton/poly as well or cotton flannel but since I do not have those products I must limit my suggestions to 100% cotton toppers.

I buy 50 of the Hartz brand puppy pads at my local Fred's department store for $9.99. They are super absorbent and a great value in my eyes. I don't know if you have a Freds store around you, but thats one option.

That is unbelievable!!!!! I switched from the Hartz brand which are $18.95 for 50, to Advance at $15.00 for 50 and that's in the BX where things are "supposed" to be cheaper, and we don't pay tax. I'm going to write the Hartz company to see why we aren't getting them cheaper.

I had 6 sons and washed more crib sheet protector's than I even care to think about, so that's my major reason of my disinterest in using them for dogs. I don't like having to spend the extra money on water and electric to wash things like that, and I definitely don't want to travel with something like that in the motor home or motel. For me, it's so much cleaner to use tissue to take off the poop to flush and then just throw the soiled pad away.

My little Valentine won't walk on anything but crate pads so i found it difficult to get him to go on a disposible pee pad. My solution? I bought those waterproof crib pads (they are about 18x18). I put one of those on the crate pad and he will do his little wee there! Works great and they are washable.
I bought 5 of them for less than ten dollars shipped from walmarts. For those that need larger ones, they have 23X20 sizes for a tiny bit more.
These are the pads that you use under the sheets on the crib, or we used them for changing pads. They have a waterproof liner and a soft, quilted, cotton top. Valentine doesn't seem to mind walking on those, so they were great for us.
