| What to expect with 6 month old pup? Tomorrow I'm going to meet a 6th month old pup that is up for adoption at a rescue. If things work out, I'll be bringing her home. I adopted Max when he was already an adult so I'm not sure what to expect when I bring her home. I already have the xpen set up so with her bed, etc. I plan to pick up her food tomorrow as well as some nutrical in case she doesn't eat. She's 4 lbs and she's been spayed. I'll have to work on house training. I'd like to pad train her as well as going outside. How often should I be taking her out, etc? Can anyone advise me on what to get (in case I forget something), and what to expect with a 6 month old?

Donating YT 2000 Club Member | Congratulations! I would take her out every few hours. It sounds like you will have her area set up nice. It may take her a few days to get comfortable. Once she settles in it will be like having a 2 year old in the house and into everything..lol I almost forgot I would have something like bully sticks so she doesn't chew on things important. You will have such a great time with her.

| It sounds like you have everything covered. Bogie was 10 months when we brought him home. I agree they are like a toddler, you prob already have your house puppy proofed for Max. I only use pee pads so no advice on potty outside. Oh and good luck I hope everything works out and you get to bring her home.

| Thanks ladies..I have bully sticks for Max so I'll make sure she gets one too. I'm not used to keeping the place puppy proof. Max doesn't touch anything that's not his. I think I've been spoiled... I remember my daughter as a toddler so I suppose it'll be just like riding a bike

| Every pup is different, but they like to chew on things and now is a good time to do serious potty training. I'm in the middle of it now and I'm using a crate when I can't watch him and at night. Unfortunately I'm missing signals that he has to go out so we've had a few accident here and there, but he has to go out a lot. I started with paper training but it wasn't working as well as outside. Ruger is also in puppy school and picks up things very quickly, so 6 months is a great time to teach obedience. Just have fun and try to think like a dog. Also lots of good "stickys" in the forum you can refer to. Oh, yeah. The breeder recommended cow ears as a chew toy. Ruger seems to like them, and when he's chewing on something he's not supposed to giving him a cow ear as a substitute works well. Last edited by ziggy925; 02-27-2010 at 09:33 AM. |

| First off congrats and I hope everything goes well with your new pup! I just brought my 6 month old girl home about 4 days ago, so we're in the same boat, and she is doing great! I do crate her at night so that she doesn't have any accidents, and I'm also pee pad training her. I just put my baby gate up in my kitchen/living room area (it's all one big space) and let her run and play in there, and I'm able to watch her at all times. She has only had maybe one accident a day, but only pee thankfully! I bought Nature's Miracle to remove any odors so that she won't be drawn back to that spot and go again. I feed her three times a day (she needs to gain about 1/2lb more, she's at 3 lbs right now) but if your pup is a healthy weight, she is OK just to eat twice a day. Her schedule is as follows: 7AM- go out to potty 7:20AM- feed and water 10AM- go out to potty 10AM to 2PM- playtime and/or naptime 2PM- go out to potty 2:20PM- feed and water 5PM- go out to potty 7PM- feed and water 9PM- go out to potty 9PM or 10PM- bedtime in crate The key is timing, it's everything! You have to make sure you make a schedule and keep to it! The more rigid you are with it, the faster she will potty train. She's rarely left alone as my hubby and I work opposite schedules, I take her with me when I go to pick up my son from school as well! You have to feel your pet out, but she might be like my Sasha and love going for rides in the car. Be aware though, that some pets get sick in the car, so take it slow at first, maybe just a couple of minutes at a time to see if your baby likes it. I bought Sasha bully sticks to chew on, but she wants nothing to do with them, so I'm gonna try some himalayan chews on her. She does like to play with her toys though, I bought her one of those long skinny plush dogs that are on all of the commercials and she loves it! Good luck!

| Thanks everyone for your well wishes. Its only 7:40pm but it feels like 10 pm. Its been a long day. First we picked up the pup which was about 1 1/2 hours away. She traveled well in the crate and didn't get sick..thank goodness. Max didn't care too much about her when we first met her, but once we came home, he was barking at her alot. I have her in her x pen, and for her safety I closed it off from Max. I've since let her out and once Max was well behaved, he got a treat. I did this each time until he left her alone. Hopefully, we are past that now. My daughter decided to name her Lily. She looks like a Lily. She is a rescue from a puppy mill so she is very timid. She's had a long day , she was falling asleep sitting up. Poor thing... I took her to my vet this afternoon. Mind you, she was spayed yesterday. The vet thinks that she was spayed earlier than yesterday and that she may have an infection. Uggh.....$200 later, she got an antibiotic shot at the office, antibiotic pills to take home and an anti-inflammatory. She's hoping that this is all she'll need and not have to open her back up to remove any necrotic tissue, etc. The visit also included a heartworm test and fecal. She smells like something else....I don't understand why they didn't bathe her prior to the surgery but now she can't have a bath for 10 days. I have "Dry Clean" from Pet Head, so I'll try that tomorrow. She's had a stressful enough day today... I'll upload pics later.

| My Nigel is 6 months old and you will definantly need some good chew toys. I use the big bones that take them a long time to chew down because I'm afraid some of them they make he can swallow and I heard it's not good on their intestines and digestive system. Nigel is very active and sleeps alot in the day and then is ready to play...he has a routine you will eventually have one too I'm sure......like a 2 year old in the house but lots of fun!

Donating YT 30K Club Member | That's great you got her. Sounds like she needs some TLC!! I hope her infection clears up and she doesn't have to have more surgery.

| Here she is... Max really isn't pleased with having a sister. He's barking at her and tried to nip her... Anyway, here she is trying to sleep
