| What to do when leaving the house? I live in a townhouse. Roxie's domain is the living room and kitchen areas downstairs. She never ventures upstairs to the bedrooms. When I go out, I leave Roxie gated in the kitchen. She has her water and a bed and toys in there with her. However, I really hate the gates. They are ugly and inconvenient. Also, Roxie will not voluntarily go into the kitchen if she sees us getting ready to go out. We have to hunt her down and pick her up to put her in there. I want to be able to leave Roxie free to roam downstairs while I am out, without worrying that she will do something she isn't supposed to. I tried this *one* time not long after we got her. I left her free while I was at work. She peed all over my living room carpet while I was gone. That has been the only time she has ever peed in the house since we have had her. Am I doomed to have these kitchen gates forever, or is there something I can do to make sure she doesn't pee all over the living room (or anywhere else) while I am out of the house? She is 3 years old and outdoor trained, so I don't think puppy pads are an option.

| Over time I had tried to let mine roam free and it has been successful for the most part. At first attempt, Hot Rod was definitely too young and didn't understand the concept and pooped where he wasn't supposed to. So I closed up the family room. Gradually, and I mean gradually, probably over a years time, I increased the downstairs room by room. My dining room as 2 entrances, one be at least 12' wide...I had chairs, boxes and anything else that could be used for a barrier blocking it, lol. Eventually I was able to add the dining room. Well, I have a guest bedroom downstairs and I didn't realize that one of them had been pooping in there! so that is closed off. During the day, they have run of all but the guest bedroom (sometimes I have left it open and nothing has happen (fingers crossed). At night they sleep in the expen. I really would like to leave the guest bedroom open as I have a daybed in front of the windows and they love to lay on the bed in the sun. I do use potty pads however. Our schedule can be very sporadic so I like to know that they do can potty if we are late. So I would say, over time you should be able to increase a room at a time. Good luck, know exactly where you are.

| I guess it depends on how long your working and how long she can hold it!! Have you considered a dog walker to let her out a few hours after you have been gone, or maybe come home at lunch time to let her out.. ?? If your working 8 hours a day it would be hard to expect her to hold it that long. Maybe you could consider the www.pottypatch.com which you can purchase I believe at walgreens and petco for about 40.00 it smells and looks like grass, of course there are better ones available online. Craigslist in my area has dogwalkers, or maybe there is a highschool student you can trust in your neighboorhood , that could use a few buck to take her out and play with her for a little while when she/he gets home from school.

| She has no problem staying in the kitchen for the 8 hours I am at work. She has never had an accident in there. If I am going to be late I call my boyfriend to come over and walk and play with her. I am wondering if maybe last time everything was still too new to her, and that's why she peed all over the living room? She's been here 5 months now...maybe I could try leaving her free for small amounts of time here and there and work my way up to a work day?

| I think I would still try the pee pads. Bella was trained to go outside also. But when I leave for longer periods of time than expected she will use the pee pads. I close off my bedroom, and she has the rest of the house. |

| I use pee pads, they have a very special area to peepee and poopoo.
