Over time I had tried to let mine roam free and it has been successful for the most part. At first attempt, Hot Rod was definitely too young and didn't understand the concept and pooped where he wasn't supposed to. So I closed up the family room. Gradually, and I mean gradually, probably over a years time, I increased the downstairs room by room. My dining room as 2 entrances, one be at least 12' wide...I had chairs, boxes and anything else that could be used for a barrier blocking it, lol. Eventually I was able to add the dining room. Well, I have a guest bedroom downstairs and I didn't realize that one of them had been pooping in there!

so that is closed off.
During the day, they have run of all but the guest bedroom (sometimes I have left it open and nothing has happen (fingers crossed). At night they sleep in the expen. I really would like to leave the guest bedroom open as I have a daybed in front of the windows and they love to lay on the bed in the sun.
I do use potty pads however. Our schedule can be very sporadic so I like to know that they do can potty if we are late.
So I would say, over time you should be able to increase a room at a time. Good luck, know exactly where you are.
