| First dog - First Yorkshire - First questions... Hi. My name's Carlos, I live in Porto (yeah... where the port wine comes from...) - Portugal. I was offered a Yorkshire Terrier yesterday. He's almost 11 weeks old. He was on a pet store and he was eating "Royal Canin Starter" which is what I bought also. On the journey home he vomited on the car (he was sitting on my girlfriend's lap). He is very shy, everytime i pick him up he starts shaking a lot (probably scared since it's a new environement or because it's too young?) He didn't eat or drink since he arrived here, but did urinate on arrival. Basically all he likes to do is to stay on his bed and sleep... he doesn't even make any noise... Is this an average behaviour of a male yorkshire terrier of this age? PS: He's only going to the vet on monday to take the third vaccine... thanks Last edited by CarlosLima; 02-12-2010 at 01:58 AM. |

Donating YT 2000 Club Member | Some get car sick. It will take him time to warm up but you need to get him to eat something. Did they give you any Nutra Cal? Yorkies sugar can drop really fast from not eating.

| No they didn't. I'll stop by the store today to get it but if he doesn't feel like eating normal food, what will make him want to eat that? Do I have to force it somehow? Thanks. |

| I would also make sure food is available during the night also, in his crate or pen or wherever he sleeps. If he is nervous maybe he would be more likely to eat something when it is quiet and if he does get hungry he won't have to wait till morning to eat which might end up being too long for such a young pup. Missy had her bad spell very early in the AM. We also gave her wet food when she didn't seem to want to eat her dry. Anything to make sure she ate enough. Good luck. He's a cute little guy! Congratulations. Missy also got sick on the car ride home too. |

| My pup still get carsick and she is over 2 years old so that is pretty normal..I just buy baby blankets to take then when she gets sick I switch to a clean one. And she would only eat the first few days if I mixed a little bit of wet food into her dry food...She couldnt resist the smell... |

| Our youngest Yorkie puppy wouldn't eat for a couple of days. Don't change his food too quickly add a different food to what he's used to very gradually. Our's took a few days to settle down and just wanted to snuggle up and sleep. I'm sure he'll settle down soon. Hugs Shirl x x |

| Welcome to YT. Your little boy is very cute. I know when I got my little girl the person we bought her from gave us a few cans of milk. It was something like Nutri-Vet Milk Replacement for puppies. But, we also did wet the dry food and she ate it up along with drinking the water.

I ♥ Joey & Ralphie! Donating Member | Joey got sick on the way home too, we had a long drive, and he almost made it all the way, but we went over a couple of big bumps and he barfed! The early weeks they do spend a lot of time sleeping, but he should start eating by tomorrow. Sometimes shaking can mean low blood sugar, if they have not had food for a while or there is a lot of stress. Many breeders recommend rubbing a little Karo syrup on their gums if they start shaking. Here is a link to symptoms of hypoglycemia. It's common the first 6 month, and it's treatable, but dangerous if you ignore it. They can also shake because they are cold. Best of luck!
