| New owner saying hello and seeking answers Hi, Wow this is great to have this forum. We live in an apartment with our two cats in Chicago and just got a Yorkie(Ziggy) a week ago, as Sharon has wanted a Yorkie for over a year. The pet store gave us his records indicating he was born in May 2009. We took him to our vet who tells us that Ziggy( a healthy adolescent male) is between one to two years old, so we got a different dog than the one indicated on the records. We love Ziggy and have moved on from that experience form the pet shop we got him from. Fortunately the vet said he is healthy, and likely has his required shots( I trust my vet on this one). Well, we have a healthy Ziggy, except for a little blood in his stool toward the end of his poop. Both Sharon(Dimendgirl1) and I(Steve) think that Ziggy's stool is too soft. I think he needs more fiber. So far he eats beneful twice a day and a Pedigree Jumbone. We take him out in the morning twice before work, and twice in the evening. We got a crate from a friend which seems too small, so we put down puppy pads in the bedroom (where he stays during the day) and newspaper. He finally went pee on the pad, but pooped on the carpet instead of the pad with the newspaper over it. He has a bowl of water in the room to drink. Any ideas on nutrition and house training would be great. Sharon and Steve |

| Hello and welcome to YT! I experienced similar problems with my puppy's pooh. She was diagnosed with having Colitis (too many good bacteria in the intestines) she required an antibiotic and a special high fiber food from our vet. I posted about it in the health and diet section of YT. I'll go over there now and get you the link so you can review it if you like. Again welcome!

Senior Yorkie Talker | Hmmmm that all sounds a little crazy, I know that you trust your vet and all but maybe get a 2nd opinion, could you obtain information from the pet store that you bought him from to see if you could get any breeder information, im stumped on that one, about his runny stool, I would change his diet and get him some good quality dog food. Beneful looks good and they make it sound great, but in reality it is junk food. I feed Reese Innova, but there are all sorts of 4-5 star foods that you can feed him. Maybe someone on here will come along and give you the link, I will try to find it. Have you told your vet about the blood in his stool, they may need to take a stool sample and make sure its not some sort of parasite. Hope this helps. And by the way welcome to YT!!!

| Here you go: Dog Food Analysis - Reviews of kibble This is at least a good place to start on your search for quality food. I have not always had good luck with the 6 star foods, picky eater, but you will find a better food that works for you and your kiddo. |

| my pup is on the Go Natural food (chicken). She is 5 lbs and eats half a cup/day. It is a little more expensive, but worth it - its good for her & these guys are so small a big bag lasts a long time! mine is in an ex-pen, they are so good in terms of giving the pup a safe, secure space. you can put your pup's crate in there, mine has hers in there along with a pee pad, food and water, chewy. at least it will keep yours off the carpet? congrats on adding Ziggy to your family - looking forward to seeing pics!

| As suggested above, I use ex-pens for mine. Keeps them safe and out of trouble when I can't keep an eye on them. I use washable piddle pads that I love. Here's the ex-pen that I have: Amazon.com: Iris CI-604 Indoor/Outdoor Plastic... Again, as suggested above, I would most definitely change the kibble brand. These are all things I've learned after joining YT so I hope that you don't feel that you are being criticized. YorkieTalk has helped me become a much better furbaby owner. Best of wishes. ~Joanne~

| Hi, was just in the windy city two weeks ago...LOVE IT! First congrats on your lil guy....My Shay, had that issue too, at first, I was very concerned and running him to the vet, nothing was wrong. After posting it in here, on the forums it was a suggested to me, that maybe changing his food would help ..so we changed his food to Natures receipe,(dry) small breed...and havent had an issue since...We get it at petco..... If the vet hasnt found anything wrong, maybe a change in diet will help..I know it helped us! Good luck and keep us posted. |
