Animal Smiley 036 New owner saying hello and seeking answers

Hi, Wow this is great to have this forum. We live in an apartment with our two cats in Chicago and just got a Yorkie(Ziggy) a week ago, as Sharon has wanted a Yorkie for over a year. The pet store gave us his records indicating he was born in May 2009. We took him to our vet who tells us that Ziggy( a healthy adolescent male) is between one to two years old, so we got a different dog than the one indicated on the records. We love Ziggy and have moved on from that experience form the pet shop we got him from. Fortunately the vet said he is healthy, and likely has his required shots( I trust my vet on this one). Well, we have a healthy Ziggy, except for a little blood in his stool toward the end of his poop. Both Sharon(Dimendgirl1) and I(Steve) think that Ziggy's stool is too soft. I think he needs more fiber. So far he eats beneful twice a day and a Pedigree Jumbone. We take him out in the morning twice before work, and twice in the evening. We got a crate from a friend which seems too small, so we put down puppy pads in the bedroom (where he stays during the day) and newspaper. He finally went pee on the pad, but pooped on the carpet instead of the pad with the newspaper over it. He has a bowl of water in the room to drink. Any ideas on nutrition and house training would be great. Sharon and Steve
