Hopefuly all the issues with Callies shoulder should be better by summer so she can play. Jackson is one of my fav yorkies to and hes such a cutie!

How long has this method been around? You know, until I came to this board I had never heard of it. I watched several docking video's on youtube and I would never do that method of removing tails. I think the twisting takes to long for one thing. I also noticed many of them don't wait after they clamp, they just start twisting.

I did noticed with all types of docking the yorkies seem to fuss less then other breeds, what do you all think about that? Coincidence? Interesting anyhow.

Here is a link to a video of a method I will NEVER agree with. Even before I saw this video I knew of the banding and have always been 100% against it.
And you will see 1 reason I am against it about half way through the video.

Another thing I don't like is when a vet stitches the end of the docked tail and the dewclaws after removal. My vet, and the other vets in his clinic do it this way. Once I went in and asked that they not do that any more. So he used surgical glue and they healed up fine and no screaming their heads off while he did each stitch. Now my vet only uses the glue;-)

When I would do it myself I never used glue I only used kwik stop

Someone, anyone, can you explain with the h*ll they are doing here?:confused: This is like a 3 week old puppy and is this a vet? I cannot tell but he is sewing and doing something else I cannot figure out. This is torture IMO. Some people are so stupid (I mean people like in this video)

I can't watch these just yet...bc last evening I watched some on Youtube, they were clamp-and-twist-the-tail-until-it-breaks on a days-old puppy and then also the kind where a vet sutures afterward too (puppy screaming w/ each suture, it was awful) -- both on days-old pups. It was very tough to watch. They were from some earlier links from Cindy...did you see those as well?

If docking is necessary, I just really wish lidocaine would be used. I'm feeling pretty firm about that...

It makes you wonder when you see the majority of the world banning and restricting these procedures and here we are, supposedly the most "civilized" country, still doing it. Is America smarter then all those countries? :rolleyes:

Maybe this country for once, should pay attention to what the rest of the world is doing and maybe learn something.

Interesting, 13%! A vet would have to evaluate absorption, correct application, and safety as topical lidocaine can be toxic if not used correctly (in humans too), but that's really interesting....and wouldn't be as painful as injections either...

Yes I was thinking the same. Certainly something to look into further. I know I will be talking to my vet about it next time I take one of my kids in. My vet is great, I have been taking my dogs to him for 17 years and I trust him completely.

If I don't agree with something I tell him and then we work a compromise or sometimes he changes his own view on something, or I will. But if I ask him to do something a certain way, he will.

When I ask him how to use a product, like safe-guard (AKA Panacur) for cattle used on pups he tells me exactly how much, etc. A lot of vets would not do this because they want to sell you the really expensive stuff they have.

Yeah I couldn't leave it, I am hooked because this is such a great topic and I really think we are all learning a lot from it. I know I am, and it is making me do even more research. i just was irritated at that moment and got over it about 5 minutes later..LOL:D

That little darling (avatar) is Gracie, she is my floppy eared girl I bought a couple of months ago. would you believe I got her from a really awesome breeder (I had to drive 4 hours round trip) with gorgeous dogs and friendly as can be, every one of them.

Anyhow (I know I can ramble, to much in my head) I only paid $700.00 for her, her sister was 1200.00.. Nothing at all wrong with Gracie except, her ears!! hahaha..

She was 7 months old and they just never stood up, they still wont..But I got full AKC on her. Cannot show her because of the ears, but I bought her for my breeding program and everything about her was perfect. I was going to buy her sister at the same time and even though hubby was willing to fork out the bucks (WOW) I got to thinking I did not want to deal with another dog just yet.

Mainly because I had a puppy at home that I was devoting 24/7 to her cus she was sick (Pennie). And we had just taken in another dog, a co-worker of Don's needed to re-home her right away. So we took her in. She is also Pregnant, bred just before we took her. She is due Feb 20th BTW. That is Mindy, she has the tail;) And is 10 pounds.

Anyhow, Gracie is such a sweeeeet dog. She is such a little lady with an awesome temperament. Man I lucked out getting her for that price. I plan to go back to this breeder and get a male this summer.:p And maybe another girl..teehee:D

Gracie also has a very proper docked tail, it's about 3" long, I feel that is a proper length and I can see it unlike Kizzies.

In regards to the videos that mommadog1 posted:

Banding where I live is actually illegal....I would think it would be everywhere, but apparently not? Is actually classified as abuse and is a punishable offense here.

The other two videos being shown are horrible, of course. The pups in the videos are MUCH older than they should be when having their tails docked. I don't think that you will get much opposition on this one. Tails are typically dog docked within the first few days for a reason--the procedure should have never been done on those pups in the video at that age.

The number of countries that have banned docking is no where near a majority of this world. There are over 190 countries today, 35 on the list for banned and 23 on the list for no ban. A total of 58 countries reported, with over 130 not listed. So, I don't think the countries banning are a majority. Also, if you notice most all of the countries banning are the European countries.

I don't think it is a matter of Americans thinking they are smarter but hopefully we are independent thinkers that don't cave in to pressure from the AR groups, that have determined how the rest of us should treat our pets. Thankfully, I still live in a country where most of my freedoms are still intact, including the choice of whether to dock or not.

It could be made less dangerous if people actual research and educate themselves on the breeding process in advance. If they make sure they are breeding females from lines of free whelpers and who have a pelvic structure suitable for breeding. Instead of just breeding and then trying to pick up on it as they do....coming to YT and not listening to advice or after the fact determined to find someone to just tell them what they want to hear.

Even in the best situation where everything is done 'by the book,' there are still going to be instances where there are complications along the way with the whelp. Just the way it is and would still happen if the 'breed standard was bigger.'
