| Does the sex really matter? My friend has a girl dog (maltese/s**tsu) and she's thinking about getting a girl yorkie. Will they get along or is it better to get a boy instead? |

| Generally getting the opposite sex will reduce the likelihood of territorial behavior but many members have two (or more) girls or two (or more) boys. I personally have one of each and it's the best of both worlds!

| I think it depends on the dogs. I've always owned 2 females, and never had any problems.

YT 2000 Club Member | We have two precious little ladies and they get along great! I think it depends on them and how you spend your time with them to make sure they don't get jealous.

| I think having a boy and a girl is best... that way they don't fight over territory |

| I have a dominant, alpha-like male Westie and EVERYONE, including the breeder, steered me to a dog of the opposite sex. If he were more happy go lucky - maybe it wouldn't have mattered so much. Supposedly opposite sex dogs will not fight as much over territory. I don't know. Anyway, it worked for us! |

Donating YT 2000 Club Member | I have girls that get along fine and then I have 2 that hate each other. If I was looking for a pet and already had a girl I would get a boy to go with her. Less worry about fighting.

| I got a boy, for the 2nd, based on everyone's opinion on here, and they really like each other alot....However, Apple, the girl, is very dominant, bossy, and assertive...I guess it's because she is the first, female, and older...Have to admit, I wonder how it would have been had Buzz been the first and the oldest, as I'm thinking it has more to do w/personality, than sex....Buzz is, by nature, sweet, loving, and gentle...Apple is independant, not so cuddly, and full of energy...She adores me, and I her, but isn't into all that mushy stuff...Buzz, on the other hand, can't get enough cuddles...Soooooo cute, having one of each....Just like kids.... |

| I think it just depends on the dog. If there was a problem I would think it would only be because there were dogs of the same sex, but I don't think it really matters |

| I think it all depends on the dog. You have to match their personality. Jackson would love to have a boy or a girl playmate. He loves every dog he meets and really doesn't have any dominant behaviors or is aggressive in any way. However, my dad's female dog... I don't think she would ever tolerate another female in her house. She's bad enough with the 2 boys she lives with.

LOL, no, I agree.... it's always different when they stay forever! But Jackson had never ever been an only dog since I brought him home until my mother's dog died a few months ago so really, he never knew what it was like to be an only dog. Even visiting over my dad's house, they have 2 dogs. I think a puppy would definitely get on his nerves though, but I'm sure they grow to love each other. I'm almost positive my next dog will be a rescue over a year old... I think Jackson would be happier to get a wrestling partner and playmate rather than havingt the "job" of correcting and teaching a puppy lol!

YT 500 Club Member | I agree its all about knowing your own dogs personalities. Alfie was always abit OTT, not particularly dominant, just into getting as much fun out of life as he can. Thats why we opted for a bitch, he gets on with males and females outside but gets a bit huffy when they enter the house, though I dont let him act territorial. Rosie is a sweety, rarely barks, loves everyone, but very submissive to more dominant dogs. Perfect match. Were planning on adding #3 sometime next year which hopefully be another girl, but her personality will have to fit in with the others. |
