| Does your Yorkie & your cat get along/play/snuggle?? I REALLY want to get a little brother for Snick but my husband and I plan to have a baby perhaps next year and we think 2 dogs and a newborn maybe too much. Then I thought of perhaps getting a kitten. I have not heard much about kitties and Yorkies getting along, but can you share with me your experience if you own a cat and a yorkie please?? Do they play together? Fight? Snuggle or sleep together? Does the dog or cat try to eat each other's food? Anything scary ever happen? Thanks a bundle-- Snick & Viv

| I have 2 yorkies, an adult cat and a nine week old kitten. The yorkies and the adult cat dont play together but they dont fight either. The kitten is very playful and trys to play with Jewels my smaller yorkie. Jewels will chase her back a little bit sometimes. They dont snuggle together but Ive seen pictures of other peoples on here that do. My yorkies were 4 yrs old when we got the first cat so they were set in their ways already. The food is tough cats cant eat dog food because they need taurine thats in cat food. The dogs cant eat cat food because it has too many calories. I put the cat food up on a step stool so the cats can get it but the dogs cant. I like having both and right now it is so fun having a baby kitty in the house

| Oh wow Chachi, you are such an animal lover, how sweet!!!! What type of cats do you have? Do they all seem to mind their own business? I think I would have more peace of mind if Sick had some sort of buddy at home when he is alone. I also do like cats, so I'm considering it. The local shelters are FULL of cats and kittens that need homes. Thanks! Snick & Viv

YT Addict | Our 7 y/o cat has slowly warmed up to our 2 y/o yorkie. They'll play and cuddle, but it took a long time to get to this point. I think if they were babies together it would have been different.

| We have two adult cats, who we have had since they were wee kitties. Berby is 6, Gabriel is 3. Both have birthdays in April. In the initial days of Galahad being home (he was rescued), Berby sought him out to spook him, and Gabriel just avoided him. He let him share our bed though. Galahad tried to sniff them, but no more than that. Now, both cats try to avoid him, although Gabriel will still share our bed with Galahad. He active seeks them out to try to play with them, bouncing and yipping and pawing at them, while both of them attempt to smack him upside the head, hiss, and run away.

| We have a cat he's 23 years old, his name is Champai. He doesn't care much for yorkies, but will play once in a while. Chloe (she's 4.5months old) really wanted to play with him when we brought her home, she just kept harassing him . Since we brought home 2nd yorkie puppy Dylan, yorkie furbabies play together and leave the cat alone.

| I had bought a kitten about a month ago. At first she didn't like Missy, but Missy was persitant and eventually won her over, so they played. Although I felt the cat was a little bit too rough at times, and worried that as the cat grew it could become dangerous for Missy. Then I brought Dora home a few days ago, and 3 times the cat tried to kill Dora. I spoke to my vet and found out that it was "predatory behaviour" and completely instinctual for the cat to act this way. She was NOT trying to play, she was hunting. The vet said not to leave Dora alone with the cat for even a second, because the cat would kill her. I decided to rehome the cat to my bestfriend whom lives up the street. I didn't want to risk her killing Dora.

Thank you all who have responded...the pics are precious!! A few nights ago Snick and I went out to get the mail and he chased after something in the dark and I saw it was the alley cat that is always in our court. The cat ran away and Snick just stood there like a lil baby as usual with the "What did I do Mommy?" look on his face! Lol...he just LOVES anything that moves!! I'm thinking this summer when I am off (I teach) would be perfect to get Snick a brother....I think my in laws and parents might kill me. They are waiting for a human baby. Hugs- Snick & Viv

| It was really scarey! Besides that one issue, the cat was great. She tolerated my 3 kids smothering her all day, she was snuggly, mellow and very well behaved. I guess that she just couldn't help it, it was her instincts. She is quite happy at her new home though. There are two other cats there, and kids to play with her. We just visited her yesterday. I'm just gonna stick to my Yorkies from now on

| I have two cats, Simba is 14. He's very mellow. He doesn't play, but he doesn't mind Tila, Mika, and Odie. D'art on the other hand is 2 and he's got more energy and is very playful. He get's along great with all three and plays all the time. He isn't rough at all. I was just thinking oh my gosh, my sister has a pom and her daughter has a cat. But they are such a pair, those two are like insane. You should see them run around playing. Bella likes to sit on the cat, the cat loves it! LOL! Last edited by Roxy 87; 12-01-2009 at 02:49 PM. |

| I have 3 cats and 3 dogs and for the most part, all is harmonious! My youngest cat was about a year old when i got my yorkie. They now play like they are the same species! It is so funny to watch. I have never had a problem with prey drive...

| I'm over at my dad's house often and they have two dogs and I bring Jackson over. The kittens came first before I even got Jackson and Jackson will STILL chase them... as will their 2 dogs. They don't not get along but it's a constant battle dog vs. cat. I would never own a dog and a cat together personally, LOL. We used to have a cat with our German shepherd and Golden Retriever growing up and it was the same issue. Luckily, the cats have learned to stay upstairs and the dogs stay downstairs (gated off). It has gotten better too. I think they just learned to put up with each other but they certainly don't play together. The pic below is the closest they've ever been to each other, ha! Have you thought about maybe adopting a dog that's already past it's puppy stage, already potty trained, going thru a rescue? It may be less stressful than a pup if it's a good match!
