| It's not getting any better!!!! Hey everyone! Glad to be back. I've been pretty occupied lately and haven't been able to chat as much as I would like to. My mom has been down staying with us and Romeo was just neutered last week. Talk about hectic! Anyway, we are remodeling our home and things are coming along nicely. We have ordered new furniture and are discussing getting new carpet. However, there is one tiny problem; His name is Romeo! He is a little over 7 months now and as I said we just had him neutered last week. I am taking a little break from work right now so I am home with him most of the time. I let him out to potty on a regular basis, but he only pees when he feels like it and it takes him forever. I'm a pretty patient person, but I'm starting to lose it. I can't get this new carpet and have him ruin it. He will ABSOLUTELY NOT poop outside. He goes in the same place every time no matter how many times I steam clean it. When he was little we tried the potty pad method, but as he got older he began to shred the potty pads, so that didnt work. When we crated him during the day he would have massive diarreha and would have to be bathed EVERY time. I love this little guy and I really want new carpet too. Is he too old to be potty trained now.....Please if you have any helpful suggestions let me know. I will try to be on here more often now... Thanks guys..I've missed you all! Jen and Romeo |

| It's never too old to potty train. If he's shredding the puppy pad, spray bitter apple on the pad. IT WORKS!!! Or you can keep an eye on him and when he's doing his poopy dance, quickly grab him and put him on the pad. Or when you see he's about to rip up the pad, firmly say NO!!! and put him on time out. Trust me tough love is necessary. I spoil and love my Coco and would never hurt her or be mean to her...but she does get time outs. As a result of my tough love she has been potty trained since 4 months old. COnsistency is the key. When I first got her, I would take her to the bathroom every 30 minutes and sit in the bathroom with her. She knew that until she went on that pad, she could go NOWHERE! Yes she whined and didn't like it but soon figured out what I wanted from her. Then she figured out that as soon as she does her deed we go out and have lots of fun, so she caught on.

| I bought a frame at PetSmart. The potty pad goes in the frame and your yorkie will no longer be able to shred it. Good Luck!

| Have you tried putting the BMs that you fin outside where you want him to go? Also if you know someone thst has a well broke baby that would be willing to let you show Romeo the ropes of going outside. My 2 year old Scottie has done a good job training Roxy. |

| Well what are you doing when he goes in that one spot? Are you reprimading him? Or do you just clean it up and not say anything? Also can you put something in that spot like a potted plant to cover it up? I found when I reprimanded coco for not going on the pad she then went on the pad and when she did she got a treat. She really did not want to disappoint me and she wanted that treat badly. It got to the point she would go to the pad and sit down and then run to me for a treat. lol....Thats when she hadn't figured out she only got one when she went potty. I read a lot of things that said just to clap and not get angry or yell when the dog missed the pad and don't get angry when they poop becaue all it teaches them is not to poop in front of you. But I tried all that and she had a mind of her own and did what she wanted. Its when I got tough what my husband calls "cocos boot camp days". lol that is when she attempted to go where she was supposed and it took her 3 days and she has not had an accident since. We also got new carpet and I was tired of walking around like I was in a mine field never knowing what was going to be on my carpet so I got tough it may be against everything every training book tells you but it worked like a charm. I also bought the holders for the pads because she was tearing them up but she doesn't anymore with the holders. Last edited by Wolftrap; 08-16-2005 at 02:44 PM. |

| My mom used treats with her weenie dog and it worked very well. My Rowdy did pretty well (but I didn't use treats becasue he is so picky, most of the time he wouldn't even sniff the treat) but was having accidents most every day till we put in a doggie door he could use - we had one but it was a plexiglass door and it was too heavy for him to push open and it made noise and he was sorta afraid of it. When we changed it to a soft plastic door that didn't make noise and he learned to go in and out - he has hardly had an accident since - maybe one every 2 weeks or so (he's 6 months). He was one of those dogs who didn't want to potty on command either - he wanted to walk, sniff, and generally mess around and then potty when he got good darned and ready. But with the doggy door, he can choose when to go and it has worked wonders. |

| a friend of mine gave me the best potty advice ever: whenever they have water, they need to go out about 10 minutes later. and my mom's advice: don't give them water after 8:00 (if you go to bed shortly there after). for me it's more like after 10:00. This was when he first started sleeping in my room. my advice is to "listen" to your dog. it took me a couple of accidents to learn that when Edgar needed to go out he would come to me and put his paws on my legs. I thought he wanted petting or to sit in my lap. NopE! He needed to GO! now we have a pretty good schedule. altho he pees on a sort of mismatched schedule, he poos 2 times a day on a predictable schedule. You and your pup CAn DO It! |
