| ADVICE NEEDED from yorkie rescuers Hi All I need advice! I'm not an experienced yorkie mommy... I am going on saturday to pick up my new baby! I need some advice on making his transition as easy as possible. He's almost three, unaltered, and his family had to give him up due to illness. He's been staying with his breeder for a while, and now he's coming with me. This has to have been hard on him. although she says he's a good boy. The breeder said he may mark when he gets to my house, which I would like to avoid if possiblel I want to do whatever it takes to make him love his new home!

| Congrats on your new adoption. I would just give him lots of space (don't avoid him) so that he can kind of explore, figure out where he belongs and get acclimated. Belly bands are great when you have a male that wants to mark. You can buy one or make one. You can find out how to make one online. I would start crate training immediately. It is NEVER too late to potty train a dog. You can google how to potty train an older dog. LOTS of sites with tips as I am sure there are tons on here too. Just haven't looked myself. Good luck! I'm sure he will be "home" in no time! It didn't take long for our adopted fuzzbutt to make himself right at home and I have no doubt that this guy will do the same. |

| BIG congrats on your new little guy!! I can not say enough awesome things about Belly Bands, lol. We recently rescued a little guy (18m - 2 years, per the vet), and he's been trying to mark in the house like crazy. I ordered ours from Yorkie Haven Rescue Boutique, it got here SO fast and it is GREAT. I'll be ordering a couple more once I have the funds, but it takes a goodly amount of money to get a new member of the family set up in your home, lol, so it has to wait a little bit!

| Congratulations.....and BellyBands are wonderful. Hopefully you are planning to neuter him which might slow down his marking but it might not. He might be doing it because he is back in the breeders home so he smells the girls. Marking is not the same as potty training issues..he is just letting the world know he is around. Most of these little ones adjust very well to a new home. It is very important you don't rush him into anything and let him have time to learn his surroundings. Usually they are very good the first few weeks (we call the honeymoon stage) and then they are feeling comfortable and you will see the real personality. Make sure you feed him the same food as what he is eating now so he doesn't have any problems.

| Congrats on the new addition! I would also recommend belly bands. Kaji came home in August and the first thing he did when he was put on the floor is walk over to the couch and lift his little leg. Belly bands are a life saver and can easily be used as a tool to help curb the marking behavior. Combine belly bands with neutering and always keeping an eye on him to correct any leg lifting and you might be able to break him of that habbit. Some are harder to break from wanting to mark, some are easier. Either way we'll be here to help you out.

| That will depend on your baby. You will have to come up with a correction that will work for the both of you. For me and Kaji, a double clap followed by a stern no (not yelling, but stern) was enough. Every single time I would let him roam the living room I would put his belly band on to catch any little droplet he might release before he heard the clap. As soon as I saw him want to lift his little leg I was ready to *clap-clap* and then say "no." It took a few repititions before he understood that lifting his leg is a no no inside. I started this maybe the second day he was home, and by the fourth he was neutered. I think the combination of both really helped. The double clap and no has worked for many things. Your baby might respond better to a no by itself, a can full of pennies that you would shake, or something else. What I used might not work with your baby, but you'll figure it out.

| You can switch his food if you want...just do it gradually so he doesn't get a tummy upset. I've already got my rescue over to the food that we use only after a couple of weeks. |
