Received a little discouragement

My Callie dosent really bark if she does its very very rare when we first got her we actualy asked the vet if everything was ok with her because she hadnt barked and it took months for her to actualy bark and its a rare thing still, if she does we all jump up to try and find her and make sure all is ok, sometimes it would be nice if she would bark when some one was coming or at the door but what she does is look out the window and her tail goes crazy wagging. Callie has never been left alone so I dont know about leaving them alone and I thought they used to call yorkies the best dog to own if you live in an apartment. Really I think it all has to do with the personality of the yorkie.

chester has lived in an apartment since I got him just about 7 years ago, I now live in a apartment turned condo, chester is not a big barker, if he barks I will say its okay so and so is there and he stops. They do like to be around their people, and they can they potty training issues which I feel can be the biggest thing. I have never had a yorkie before and I would turn heaven and earth for this little burger. They are the best watch dog, alert and very curious. They need to be socialized well when they are a puppy, good luck

I think regardless of breed, all dogs have to be disciplined. With proper training, you will not have 'barkish' dogs. so, yorkie or not, as long as you have the time and patience to train them, they will be well-disciplined dogs. just my two cents

Please don't listen to negative things people have to say about Yorkies. They can't judge what the perfect match dog breed is for YOU. Yorkies are for people who want a furchild. They have a personality as close to a dog thinking that they are human more than any other breed. They are not dogs that you stick in a corner or backyard to leave to be to themselves. They are an awesome companion breed and have been domesticated so much that owning one is like having a love giving child, that permanently needs your love and attention. People that don't like them probably aren't comfortable with having that much love shown to them, and are probably archaic with their lazy dog/owner relationship beliefs. LOL

My Yorkie is the quietest of my four dogs She only barks when playing with the others, or when she needs me to attend to her, lol (Then it really isn't a bark, ... more of a little yip-schmit .. the bossy kind )

I know that you have gotten a TON of responses on this, but I was in the same situation that you were in. People were discouraging me to get a Yorkie! I always loved how cute and tiny they were and everyone kept telling me about how they are such a stubborn little breed, and not good apartment animals, and I have to tell you NONE of the above is true. I have a 2 room apartment, Lillie LOVES it, she loves her crate. It only took me 3 weeks (shes 17 weeks too) to teach her how to sit when I want her to, sit at crossways, go lay in her bed and we're not having a hard time with potty training, she's getting it! I would NEVER have it any other way. Sometimes it baffles me when people put Yorkies over due to their so called 'reputation', but I let all of that go because I wanted to train a dog, I wanted to have a doggie who loves me all the time and wants to be around me! In my eyes, Yorkies are PERFECT little creatures!

I have two and they can bark at times, but mostly if they hear a noise outside at night (which I don't mind) or if someone is at the door. They bark outside like any other dog with a busy sidewalk next to the house, my cocker spaniel did plenty of that, too. So when they are too rumbunctious we call them back inside.
I think they would do fine in an apartment, I have never heard a Yorkie bouncing around when we lived in an apartment, we heard the bigger breeds that were 'smuggled' in.

Zoe is a bigger barker when I leave the house only because she thinks one ride means always ride and gets upset. Guiness likes to bark in the car when people walk by. I remember my grandmother's cockapoo do that named Susie it was a riot to watch her face all mooshed into the window LOL

I think if you heart says yes and you are only worried about a yapper, it's a behavior you can work on

Tucker is not a barker, unless he wants to play or hears something outside he doesn't like and even then I have trained him to hush. I think the key is to first off, find a reputable breeder. Make sure you meet and interact with the adults and see if they have personlalities that you like. Also, socialize your pup as much as you can and contunue doing so throughout their lifetime. I took Tucker everywhere with me, let people touch and hold him. He now adores people, kids, whoever will give him attention. The problem now is that he will bound up to anyone he sees, regardless of wheather that person likes dogs or not (LOL!). He's so good with kids too! He's never snippy, skiddish or mean. I still take him everywhere I can. It does take tons of patience and consistency in the beginning. Expect to work on traning for a good two years. And don't let your pup get away with anything just because he's cute. I always had to ask myself, what would I do if he were a big dog?? In other words, he would not be aloud to jump on or bark at people, and those little puddles of pee would NOT be cute!! It took close to two years to completly house break Tucker and I'll amit, I got frustrated at times and would have to come to YT for moral support!! Anyway, he's is now fully housebroken and trained just the way I want him. He is trully the dog of my dreams and I attribute that to patience and consistency in training and patience when looking for the right breeder. Good Luck and welcome to Yt!

I am still reading all of the posts on here and I am really feeling the kindness and support from all of you. Learning a lot, too. I am going to get a Yorkie. I know it and my friends better just get used to it!! (now with my mom-that's going to be a different story but she doesn't live with me so I am going to go slow with her to introduce my new house mate).

Having a hard time finding a breeder in my price range ($900+ is just too much for me right now) but I will keep looking at the message boards and I have found a few yorkie loving friends that I hope to meet up with when I get my new puppy for play dates (and advice and support-I know I can get that here, too)!!
