| I really do not see any type of chastizing or lecturing, just the plain old truth and facts. If the person that owns the female is already a "breeder" and wants to get into breeding Yorkies bc there aren't any good Yorkie breeders in your area, then she better start to learn and research her butt off regarding it, bc the fact that she was going to breed her 6 lb female to a 12 lb male is pretty darn irresponsible and IMO puts her right into the category that she is obviously trying to stay out of. Best Wishes... |

| Simply put, yes, he is too big--for both the female you are using, and to be bred at all. |

| YT 1000 Club Member | I just want to add that It's not just the small Yorkies with health problems. If you look there are many posts with people that have sick dogs in all shapes and sizes. Personally I wouldn't use a 12 lb male on a female 1/2 his size. She could get seriously hurt. I think that although it may seem to you that others are jumping on you, they really aren't they are just trying to answer your question and give you advice. Sometimes we tend to read more into how the post is worded than the actual advice.

| he is too big. She could get hurt, and plus, the babies may be too big for her and she could die or have serious problems while giving birth. I think that the males should always be smaller than the females, for this reason.

| YES that is way to big! I have a 16+ lb. boy and a 61/2 lb girl and when I first got her we took her to the vet to get shots and all the info. about getting her spayed and trust me the vet told us NOT to let him get a whole to her when she did go in heat because that can hurt her, it also can make her pregnacy very hard and of course labor to and last but not least the pups will probably be very big so you may not wanna do that.

| Rachel, Yes, he is too big. When my Maltese slipped under the fence duing a heat and came in 4 hours later all glassy eyed, I of course took her to the vet and he said "if the dog is too much bigger than her as the babies grow inside her they can actually split her open and kill her if they get too big. Now if she was bigger than you're boy, it would be fine and no worries. Also, to register AKC Yorkshire Terriers, they need to fit inot the ACK standard of max weight of 7 pounds.

Why did your friend get the female from Germany? Is this a Biewer or a Yorkie? Do you know that almost all kennels in Germany have Herpes...it is out of control in Europe. Your friend wants to add another line..how many different breeds is she breeding? Are you stating the Yorkies would be raised in a kennel? While Missouri is known as the puppy mill of America I do not see you and your friend doing any thing different if you want to put these two dogs together and then raise them in a kennel. Having a healthy dog is just part of the equation but the size is a hugh problem in breeding for the betterment of the breed. Doing the right thing is doing your homework and breeding for the betterment of the breed and staying within standard. Sorry if all of this sounds tough but most of us here care very deeply for this breed and breeding responsibly is part of doing the right thing.

I'm hoping you don't take this as chastizing or lecturing, but you hit a nerve when I saw where you were from. You didn't look too hard for good breeders in your area. I can't believe you drove 6 hours away when you're just 50 miles from Kansas City and some great YTCA Show Breeders, and I live 60 miles from you and there are 3 Show Breeders, including myself within that 60 miles, and 2 Breeders that I know with healthy, beautiful puppies right in your city. They don't Show, but are breeding to Standard. Now, if you're like some of the calls I get, looking for full registration for $400.00, just in case you may want to have puppies for your relatives, or have your kids experience birth.. you may have to drive 6 hours for that. The obvious problem of breeding your male to her female and the size difference aside... What birth weight background does your male have??? I would be concerned about what birthweight a bigger male might throw that would be very dangerous for the female. It scares me that your friend wants to start a kennel for Yorkies, so that there are "good" Yorkies in your area, when she's starting out with a 12 lb male for stud. We should only use the best for our breeding, not just put a male and female together for puppies.. that's not becoming a good breeder, just adding to Missouri's problem. | |

| Yes to big for her.. I have had myself a puppy and the guys said it was a small/standard size yorkie, but after a few weeks he was already way to heavy.. he is a beautifull dog and i love his personality.. but i wanted a standard size at that time and its pretty frustrating f the dog turns out way to big.. cause i couldnt travel with him .. or take him with me easily.. because he was to heavy ... Also i think its very dangerous for the female.. the female is small compare to the male.. so you can imagine its getting pretty hard for her when it comes down to labor.. Sorry to say and i dont want to attack.. but i think its pretty dom to ask the question anyways.. And i think its also strange to say : "would rather have a healthy happy dog who is part of a family than a "perfect" dogs who is unhealthy, unhappy and lives in a kennel because it doesn't respond well to people." Very weird thoughts.. But good luck anyways with finding another guy.. maybe you should see and post here to find a nice male who fits perfectly. regards, Priscilla |
