I had posted that I believe the pit bulls should all be spayed and neutered. I would not want to kill those that are living now, but I do believe these breeds that encompass the "pitt bulls" slang or otherwise, were bred without any regard for the dogs or humanity. It was a MANKIND mistake, but it needs to end. The breed was not bred to hunt, they were bred to fight to the death. Responsible breeders are supposed to breed to temperment. The pit breeders bred to the WRONG temperment and only bred the most vicious, the strongest bites, the worst of the breed.
I do not speak from a position of fear or ignorance. Over my many years (yes, I guess I am an "elder" as I was recently called here :D), I have had the misfortune of having way too much closeness with several pit bulls. My very good friend has a pit bull that is the most lovable thing -- but I would no more trust it than I would a serial murderer. I will pet it, be kind to it, even like it, but it will NEVER play with my dogs or be around my grandchildren unattended. I have had lots of friends and one family member that owned these dogs. I have seen them all stick up for the breed and claim they are all the gentlest dogs ever. But eventually, all but the one, have hurt someone or killed a pet and showed just how vicious it could be. It is not the dog's fault. And these were well-trained dogs with well-educated owers. Unfortunately, man bred them to be killing machines. They can only fight that off for so long.
So, I am all for legislation that requires spaying and neutering of all pit bulls, whether they are called American Pit Bulls, American Staffordshire Terriers, or whatever..... We have made the right decision for so many breeds, we do not need to continue to live with the mistake that was the breeding for pit bulls. This is just my opinion and does not affect anyone else, except for the way I will cast a vote if given the chance. Unfortunately, I live in the land of the "good ol' boys" and backwoods dog fights are still a fact of life. So, I doubt we will get to vote as many other communities, states, and even countries have been able to do. |
