"Parti Yorkies" What's your opinion

So what I am so curious about is how it starts. You can't breed brother and sister dogs right? So where do you get the Biewer to start with? like in the beginning the dogs would not be as they are today, they were slowly shaped that way, so how did they start out? What breeds did they mix to acheive that look? And since each breed is essentially created over time, why is there sometimes so much resistance to create a new breed? I find it so fasinating.

You summed that up perfectly! I think that there are a lot of dishonest "parti breeders" out there focusing on just color alone and profiting a pretty penny off of it...because of the "rare" factor. (Or likely just mixing something else in altogether.) I think those types of breeders really give those who ARE trying to go about breeding them ethically a bad name. And that really is unfortunate.

As far as following the standard except for color, I made a similar statement not long ago and had my head ripped off for it. I'm glad you were able to make such a simple AND TRUE statement without it turning into blood shed.

Despite some misconceptions that some people have, I'm really on the fence as far as partis go. The problem that presents itself is finding people who are actually taking the appropriate steps in breeding them ethically and not just hiding under the "creating something new all breeds started somewhere" excuse.

Many breed clubs have allowed variety classes for dogs that did not meet the standard set for the breed. The beagle has one for size. Both standards for the breed are identical except for height! So why can't those of us...who truly love the parti for it's color (and not how many pups we can produce to sell)...keep the dream that one day it will be granted show status with it's own color variety class? The American cocker spaniel has THREE color varieties and they are not shown in the same ring until group.

That is my hopes and dreams for the American Parti Yorkie.

But as BJH already stated so eloquently...the variety will need a lot of serious breeders who are more in love with the color (more so then money it can make) and start breeding the parti yorkie to a standard comparable to the show yorkie of today before that can ever happen. And right now...sadly...I don't see that happening anytime soon.

I agree with you that at least 50% of yorkies fall short of standard, I would say the number is closer to 90%, but that's exactly why I encourage people to only support those breeders who are breeding to standard. I disagree with a breeder breeding to meet public demands because you are altering the breed in a way in which you personally find desirable. Too many breeds integrity has been compromised because breeders decided to alter the breed in ways that were fashionable. If a breeder were truly interested in developing this new color scheme, I believe they would sell at prices that were similar to any other dog with a fault, after all they wouldn't be in it for the money, but they would just be trying to improve the breed. As far as the claims made that you charge more because your breeding stock cost more, how about the show breeder, if we were paying them the cost of what they actually put into their dogs, the price would be at least $10,000. I am totally against breeding as a business, because you don't really do what's best for the breed when the goal is making money.

Yeah, I don't really understand that logic or how it justifies charging so much either. It just seems like the dogs started out overpriced and the trend is just continuing down the line. I would feel the same way if it were a standard colored Yorkie as well. To me, charging an astronomical price for a Parti is no different that the breeder who charges an arm and a leg for an extremely tiny dog. When that happens, people are normally livid.

Not sure what point your trying to make here?

Both the Parti and the Biewer ARE the same dog.. they are BOTH a tri colored Yorkshire Terrier.. that's it.. sooo simple. They have developed differently because there was a focus in Germany to perfect a specific look by Mr. Biewer.. that has not/was not the focus here in the states.. here these beautiful dogs were hidden or petted out or worse.. they are just starting their journey here and don't have the benifit of the 26+ years the Biewers have yet. I'm sure the breeders who are focusing on the Parti's dream the same dreams many of us have for our Biewers.. they hope one day to be "accepted" and to be able to hold their heads up high and be shown in the ring on equal footing with their stunningly beautiful yorkie brothers as a variety of a Yorkshire Terrier. The AKC is full of examples where this has happened in the past .. who knows ... the "underworld" could freeze over? LOL

Some of the most frequent, most knowledgeable posters have Parties (not sure of plural spelling). I am not justifying the price on Parti's in any way but the prices are based on demand. Just as a breeder would hold on to a puppy for sometimes up to 10 months to see what the size would be or how close the dog comes to the standard. The smaller the size and the closer to the standard the higher the price.

Breeders don't hold a puppy for 10 months to decide on price. They hold a puppy because they think it has show potential or breeding potential. They can always get much more for a 12 week old puppy than a 10 months old, but sometimes when they hold one back, the female doesn't grow big enough to be a breeder, or has some other flaw. Much of the demand for parti's is brought about by breeders and their claims of "rareness", and this is what appeals to people who don't understand. They are only rare only because it's a fault and shouldn't be bred for, really good breeders don't breed for faults. I would not suggest buying from a breeder who sold smaller pups for larger amounts. I should add that a really good breeder is always trying to do what's best for the breed, not their personal interests.

Hmmm over priced are they? Lets see you payed 4,000 for a top line female, you pay 1000 to get her bred to a great male. You have complications , so a c- section, you only save 2 puppys , what price would you place on them???? after shots , worming, socialization at 16 weeks,plus they are DNA'd ????????????

Last summer I was at a IABCA Show , saw Biewers being shown, and asked if Parti Color Yorkies could be shown and what the standard would be for them. Apparently they use the standard from the country the breed originated in.

This is the email that I received the next week.

" The Parti colored Yorkie can show in our shows, she would be judged against the FCI standards (www.fci.be)"
