| He's marking everything!!!! We have two male yorkies in the house and they are marking everything. One yorkie belongs to me and the other belongs to my friend. This is my first yorkie so I don't know much about neutering. My question is if I neuter my yorkie will this limit his marking? |

Donating YT 10K Club Member | Hate to break the news to ya....but it may or may not. Once marking has begun sometimes it is impossible to break. You could buy belly bands.

| How old is your yorkie? Neutering should help significantly if he's young enough. But if it's been going on for a while - it's hard to say.

| I feel like he's still young enough that you MAY be able to nip it in the butt! Either way - I'd recommend getting him neutered for more reasons than one. Jackson was neutered at 6 1/2 months old and he had already begun marking outside before this but never indoors. He will mark outside (but not obsessively) but never inside still. He's now 11 months old almost.

| Since I don't know much about neutering, can you give me some of the reasons why he should be neutered? |

- Reduces the distracting and destructive behavior associated with the male's efforts to get out and find a mate. - Reduces the urge to roam. This makes it less likely that you will lose your pet, which in turn makes your pet less likely to contract a disease, get in a fight, get injured, or become a victim to cruelty, poison, or traffic. - Eliminates sexual discomfort, distress, or distraction ... making your pet happier and more content. - Eliminates testicular tumors and reduces prostate gland problems. - Reduces the urge to fight. And I personally believe that pet owners should neuter/spay all their pets if they're not planning on breeding (I don't think anyone should breed unless they are certain of the dogs lineage and genetics, etc) I do feel most people on this site would agree with me. I think the only reason that someone shouldn't is if it's going to harm the pet. But do your research and base your own ideas!

| Neutering sounds like a great idea. Thank you for the information. I plan on getting him neutered sometime this month. For now, I think I'm going to try a belly band. |

| I probably wouldn't own a male dog that was not neutered, lol. Good idea on the belly band! Also, all the places he's marked already, be sure to clean them with an enzyme cleaner like Nature's Miracle to get the smell totally out so he doesn't have that urge to mark again. Is the other male yorkie you're living with neutered?

| neither of my boys are neutered, but they do know better than to mark in the house. Basically, it's like potty training. When I caught them doing it, I would just yell "no!", and they'd quit right away. Eventually they got the point, and they NEVER pee inside. pooping has taken a little longer to hone in on, but they're finally getting it. good luck to you!

| Neutering will not STOP the marking, sorry. Either belly bands or you can try to start training over. Keep him on a leash near you and limit his space, when he goes where he is supposed to reward him . You need to get a cleaner to get rid of the scent , if you don't he will just mark in the same area. It's a very very hard habit to break and neutering has nothing to do with it or stopping it. Good Luck |

I do agree that if it's already become a learned, habitual behavior, neutering will not automatically stop it. You have to remember also it can take months for the testosterone to fully get out of their system. I feel the reason this dog is marking indoors is because there's another un-neutered male in the house, and that creates competition. I would suggest to get both dogs neutered and see what happens. I agree with one of the posted above that it's like potty training though too... when you see them doing it, say NO, and take them to the place they're supposed to go. Just watch them 24/7. I believe they can be trained not to mark but it takes a lot of work and patience and time. Some people may disagree with me that they can be trained not to do it.
