| DEW claws, cut em or leave em?? Are puppies supposed to keep them or have them removed? If they aren't removed already, should they be removed when i get her? Why do they have them and do they need them or not? |

| Yorkies are usually born with the front dew claws. They are removed at the same time their tails are docked; between 3 - 5 days old. The dangers of leaving them on is they do get hung up on things, and and if left in place and not trimmed regularly they can grow into their skin.....there really is no need for them...

| It is my understanding that they are to be removed when they dock the tail, at a day or two old. They remove them because they tend to get caught and could rip off. All 3 of mine have their dew claws and I have not had a problem. Perhaps someone else could guide you as well.

| Uni doesn't have hers, and I had a male foster before who did. It is soooooo much easier to cut the nails if you don't have to bother with them. They are hard to see under all that fur, and they need to be short. They are esp hard to cut if your pup doesnt' like their paws being touched. Question for the breeders out there...can it still be done during s/n surgery?

| We get our puppies dews removed at the time of tail docking (or in the case of a Biewer just for the dews). Some will never have a problem if left on, but sometimes they will snag and you have to remember to cut them or they will curl up and into their skin. If when they are older and they snag a lot the vet will have to remove them and the surgery is a big deal compared to if they just had them taken off at birth.

Phantom Queen Morrigan Donating Member | With yorkies they are supposed to be removed at the time of tail docking at 2-3 days old. If done later its more painful and requires stitching. There is no need for dew claws, however all breeds are born with front ones, and some with back ones as well (there are actually a few breeds that have double dews on the back). They can get caught on things that get ripped off or damaged but honestly while working as a vet tech i rarely saw it. One of Morgan's dew claws actually grew back after being removed as a baby. I guess the breeder just didn't do it right...

| I absolutely loathe Zoe's dew claws! They are a pain in the rumpshaker.

I don't understand why breeders don't remove them, as I find removing dew claws a bit less heart wrenching than docking tails.

| Jackson has his dew claws and they've never bothered him. But they're totally pointless.

| One of mine has then, the other doesnt- We always touch their feet as pups and get them used to it. Ryders arent really an issue and they dont grow as fast as the other nails- I do his nails twice a months and most of the time his dew claws only need to be done once a month.

| Dew claws Hello everyone, I am new to the site. I have a 3 yr old that has the dew claws. I want to get them taken off as they bother her. Does anyone have an idea of the cost? |

| Has she been spayed? If not, you could have it done at the same time and the cost should be minimal. As far as having it done as a stand alone surgery, I don't have any idea.
