With yorkies they are supposed to be removed at the time of tail docking at 2-3 days old. If done later its more painful and requires stitching. There is no need for dew claws, however all breeds are born with front ones, and some with back ones as well (there are actually a few breeds that have double dews on the back). They can get caught on things that get ripped off or damaged but honestly while working as a vet tech i rarely saw it.

One of Morgan's dew claws actually grew back after being removed as a baby. I guess the breeder just didn't do it right...
