| Considering an older male We are considering adding to our family. We are looking at purchasing a male that is 12 months old from a breeder. He is not nuetered but will be if added to our home. I have a female and male presently at home...both neutered and have been together since they were young. My boy is the alpha and the girl is submissive. What issues might I encounter bringing home an older boy? Will marking be an issue and will it subside after he is neutered? Our present male never has done this. Also, what type of issues will I need to be aware in bring home a new but older addition? I am new to this forum and appreciate your help in this decision. Thanks, |

| We recently added our 10 month old male yorkie and it was the best decision we ever made. He has been amazing! He was just neutered about a week before we got him and we have had no problems with marking. There can always be problems, but I think getting an older puppy is a great choice. At least you know what you are getting!

| Thank you Roscoe'sMommy42. It is so good to hear that it worked out. You are right in that you know what you will be getting. While I do enjoy the puppy stage, it can be a lot of work so I am fine with an older baby. Just want to be sure that I consider all things. Thanks, |

| Do you know if he is marking already? If he is, neutering may not stop him. Also, your male may pick up the habit from him, especially since you say he's the alpha in your pack. Just like kids, dogs seem to love to share bad habits! I have who friend who does Yorkie rescue. She had a neutered male who never marked his entire life until one particular rescue stayed with them as a foster. At ten years old, her guy started marking and didn't stop after the rescue went to his forever home. Ask yourself if you can accept the worse cases scenario where both males mark and have to wear belly bands. I would also recommend letting the three of them meet on neutral territory beforehand to see how they interact. |

| Good idea adopting an older pup. That's what I plan to do. Is he housebroken & socialized with the breeder's family? The reason I ask is because some breeders keep pups in kennels.

| Thank you for your responses. The male I am considering is housebroken and socialized. I am not sure if he is kept in the house or in a kennel though. The posting regarding if he is marking is a very important. I had a friend whose male was bad at doing this. I am sure my male would be sure to repeat the action and leave his mark. This will need to be something to seriously consider. Maybe I should consider going with a female instead. Thanks. |
