First of all, your puppy is adorable!

Anyways, there are generalized "negatives" that go along with EVERY breed, but when it comes to things like house training, snappiness, yappiness, etc., it really depends on the dog. For example, my first yorkie was very easy to train in obedience, tricks, and house breaking but he can be snippy to some strangers and he's not a huge fan of kids, but he tolerates them. He's a bit snippy because of some things that happened to him as a puppy (looooong story). Our second yorkie is VERY friendly but was very, very hard to train in a lot of things. He came to us knowing how to "sit" on command only half the time. It took me about a year to train him how to "down". Potty training has been almost impossible with him, but once again, he had a really rough start to life, which caused delays in his learning... another long story. My point is, every dog is different. Stay consistent in training, teach him that you are the alpha dog in the pack, take him to obedience classes while he's young, and SOCIALIZE him with everyone and everything.

I'm sure you made the right decision. Puppy raising just takes time, patience, and consistency. These little yorkies are sooooo special. My dogs bring so much joy and laughter in my life and I'm sure yours will too. Just enjoy him! Good luck and congratulations!

Oh also, if you do have any problems now or in the future, you must correct them right away. Taking him to obedience classes will help because you can talk to a trainer. Also, don't be afraid to post here with questions... with this many members on YT, I'm sure there is at least one person, if not several, that's "been there, done that". There is a lot of helpful advice on here :-)

I fear that I cant handle it and wonder if I should find him a proper home now before we all get too attached. I just dont know what the heck to do. Like I said, it seems like he has a great personality so far - but how do I know it will stay with him? He is only 12 weeks old. Oh - and here is a pic of my Harley. Hes so sweet and tiny! I have been lurking here for weeks since I got him. I figure you would all have some insight on what I should do!
Quit reading the negative info!!! Yorkies are lovely dogs and make the best pets. Some (NOT ALL) can be snappy, but obedience school deals with that. You paid what he was worth to you, therefore you did not pay too much. Cost is relative. If he is sweet now, then he will be sweet for the most part...but not even you have all good days so give him a break on the bad days and also remember he (like you as an adolescent and teenager... will have his time of rebellious adjustment, then like you and everyone else he settles down!! Take him to obedience school or train him at home that will eliminate any potentially negative behavior or at least make them manageable... HIGHLY RECOMMENDED... "Before and After Getting Your Puppy.. by Ian Dunbar....excellent book on living with a puppy. ENJOY YOUR PUPPY!! THIS TIME WILL NOT LAST FOREVER!

not every yorkie is snappy...and my tip on housebreaking successfully is to be consistent....lol

if you want him to do his business outside you must stick to it....i would crate train for most dogs will not potty where they sleep or eat....

btw congrats!

Smile Overwhelmed, Now OVERJOYED!

We have had Bella for a month. We have NEVER owned a dog and I have to say that it was a bit overwhelming in the beginning. We didn't plan on a dog and rehomed Bella for some dear friends of ours. Potty training, dog walks,
a constant shadow at my feet, crate training, leash walking. I had no idea what any of it meant or how to do it. But, after our first 7 hours with Bella my husband and I were both in love! We take each day at a time, read all the information we can, and enjoy every every new behavior, lick, scratch, etc. I know how you feel, but all I can say is "hang in there", all Yorkies are different and you'll learn all about yours each and every day. Be patient with yourself and pretty soon that ovewhelmed feeling will decrease and will be replaced with a sense of joy and happiness. I still have moments when I think I want my puppy-free life back. But, they pass quickly and I realize I am glad that I had the opportunity to be a dog owner. I know you will, too!

I too, was a little worried when I bought home my first Yorkie. I think I became overwhelmed. Now .... I have three !! and would love to have more but my husband would kill me... No offense to other breed lovers, but I just think they are the most wonderful little breed in the world.
One tilt from that head.. and that's it.. they got you !!!

Probably not what you want to hear but I had the "puppy blues" when Ellie was a couple months old and didn't know if I could keep up with everything. That soon went away and all was okay. Today, 8 years later, I have it again. There are times when I can't stand being away from her for even 5 minutes but today she got very aggressive towards me (not uncommon) and it is always a concern when she will do it to someone else. She also has potty training and extensive health issues along with uncontrollable barking at times and tons of dietary restrictions. Some dogs are just not easy. I love her to pieces but it does get overwhelming at times and forget doggy daycare and boarding just anywhere with all of her problems... She comes on vacay with us. I like it but it does mean no break for me.

Socialize your puppy like crazy and hope there are no health problems and all should be fine.

Def not what I wanted to hear.

I just heard from the vet. He has ringworm. I was given the option to return him, or they would fix and give back, or exchange him for another puppy. My friend seems to think I if I return him them will euthanize him. I cant do that. She will be taking him for a while until he is cured - she is an angel. I am so upset - I cried all day thinking I was taking him back to the place I got him. And now that he is not going back, I am just overwhelmed in general. What did I do? I need a drink.

Give him lots of socialization, people places and things, dont put him on the floor at petsmart, until he has had all of his shots, they are germy places. I took chester to puppy classes, a good thing and be consistent with the potty training they are worth every minute of it. I love chester more than life itself, they are the best companions, we travel every where together. They are smart little burgers, and they can be stubborn.
