Default What do you think of this little fella?

Hi everyone! I posted a few days ago that I was looking for a Yorkie and I think I may have found the one for me. Here's a link to the add with a picture

Yorkie - Nashville Dogs & Puppies For Sale - Kijiji Nashville, Tennessee

The lady that has it is about 20 minutes from my home. I originally saw the add in our local paper today for the first time. I think I may call tomorrow about it because the email function didn't work on kijiji. What do you think of it? I know the price is very low, but I'm only looking for a pet, not a show dog. Plus many of the puppies here in West TN, outside of Memphis, range from $300 to $500. Any comments would be appreciated!!

We got our Ryder for $300 but that is rare from what I have seen. I would be very cautious! If it is true it is a very cute puppy!

I am afraid this is a puppymill or possibly a broker. I googled the phone number and found this ad at the bottom of this page.
Jackson Sun Classifieds: Dogs, Cats, Birds, Others

I copied and pasted the ad in case the link doesn't work.

I've found a few on kiijiji since posting the first one that are within 30 miles from my house and most have said they just don't register anymore since the costs are high. Plus this area is full of tiny small towns and no one usually wants to pay much if anything for a dog. People around here usually go for the box of puppies in the back of a truck, if you know what I mean. But then again, we got our sweet mutt that stays outdoors for free and he's a doll, so I can't say much LOL! But seriously, I think that is why most yorkies within 30 minutes of where I live don't go for over $600. People around here just won't pay it. But thank you for the advice!

If you can't afford the price of a pet from a reputable breeder, you very well may not be able to afford a Yorkie at this time,as the purchase price is so minimal compared to care abd Vet costs etc. Spay/neuter and dentals can be costly and will be required. A Yorkie gets sick you can't mess around you have to get into the Vets. Toy dogs often have teeth issues and they need cleaning sometimes annually sometimes every few years and done by a qualified Vet. This is all not very cheap.
Just search around this forum especially the sick and injured dogs to find out exactly the potential costs you could run into to properly care for a dog/puppy.
JMHO.

Yep, that is the add that was in the paper. I may see if I can just drive out there tomorrow because I found the address, too. I might be the ideal place for a puppy mill since the town is small (like less than 1000 people small). But then again, people around here are known for having a TON of animals just to have them. I'll definitely check it out before I buy.

I never said I couldn't afford the price of the puppy. I understand about vet bills, believe me. I have 3 cats, two of whom were rescues, one was VERY close to death. The vet bills weren't cheap to get them healthy again and able to live in the house with our oldest cat who came from the Humane Society. Any animal that lives in my house comes before me or my husband because we consider them our children since we don't have any. We have an excellent vet in this area who has taken care of all of our animals and he does a great job from dealing with small cats to horses and livestock. And he doesn't charge as much as the vets in the larger city that is an hour away simply because he knows how people are about money here. I understand what you are saying, and I've done my research on yorkies, as well. I know what problems can arise and I'm prepared to deal with that and their normal vet bills. Plus, I know from experience with other animals that the price of the animal doesn't necessarily matter ALL of the time. And I plan to check out the place where I get my yorkie thouroughly and make sure to ask any necessary questions, too.

$350 for an AKC registered Yorkie puppy is a very low price. Just be careful, try to find a reference of a previous buyer. Check out the health guarantee, ask her for a vet reference, check with the local dog owners club. Some smaller town areas just have a dog fancier's club, no specific Yorkie club. But still they may knwo some background of areas breeders. Ask the vet, groomers, and other yorkie owners what they know.

As for the specific puppy in the picture -- it is too hard to really assess by those face only pics. You need to look at the whole pup. Check his back for straightness; learn to check knees to ensure tightness; look at his bite; check the palate; check the eyes for clearness, no excessive watering & hair around the eye not growing inward; check the build, head carriage, and ears, see if both testicles have dropped. Ask about the health history of the parents and at least the grandparents too. Any genetic faults being passed? Any LP, liver shunts, heart problems? Check the personality of any adult dogs at the premises. Watch the puppy play, run (want them to run straight instead sidewinding), and drink water. Some trachea problems are more obvious when they drink. Check out the environment where the pups are kept and raised. Make sure there is a recent health certificate from the vet. Also make sure to call the vet and ask specifically about the puppies. The breeder should have given permission for the vet to comment to prospective buyers.

I know I am forgetting lots of things to check for, but hopefully these will give some ideas to add to your own. Even when you are just looking for a pet, it is important to get the best bred dog possible to prevent future medical problems that can not only be costly but sometimes heartbreaking.

Good luck with your decision and be sure to post pics when you do chose your new baby!

Oh, and I forgot. Many people in this area register CKC instead of AKC for whatever reason. I just wondered if CKC was cheaper to register and therefore the puppies registered CKC may be cheaper?

Thanks for the advice. With the help of independent research and this forum, I'm getting very well-educated in Yorkies!! Until I see the place where she is and know for sure, I know I won't be able to see whether or not it is ok to get her. But I know where the lady's home is and the area VERY well since my father is a minister at a church within walking distance of the home. The lady that has the puppy owns a small local beauty shop that she operates from her home, which is common here. I know the family name and they are good people and trustworthy, so I'm hoping that it's not a mill or anything and just a lady who happens to have lots of little furbabies, which is also common in this area! In fact, when I was younger I had 6 dogs at one time because we would get one and people would just drop them in our yard and we'd end up taking care of them! And a lot of people get several toy breed dogs and keep like 3 or 4 of different breeds around here. So I definitley want to see the parents of this puppy to make sure she is pure-bred. Thanks again for everyone's advice!

Other posters have given you great advice. I just want to add that, sometimes, when you pay so little for a pup, you end up paying big time in the future. I think if a pup is this cheap, it is fair to assume that health tests weren't done as these are expensive. You could end up with a pup that has many health issues.

I would also be careful of ads that say so little. Imagine, if it were your puppy that you were selling, wouldn't you include more info? I know I would.

I believe all of this because of personal experience. My first puppy, Cash, was from a bad breeder and I am still paying for it. Not health-wise, he is very healthy. But he is also 10lbs and way over standard. His colour, although beautiful, isn't considered a proper colour for yorkies.

The main problem with him was his behaviour issues. He had no problem living in his own filth and he is very aggressive with strange people.

My new puppy, June, is from a hobby breeder who breeds about two litters a year, usually only one. I paid a lot more for June, but she is totally worth it. She is 3lbs at 5 months and is the most adorable, lovable puppy ever.

Everyone comments on how happy she is.

I just don't want you to make the same mistake that I did. Take your time and find a reputable breeder, otherwise you might end up with a dog that you aren't happy with. If you want a proper yorkie, go to the proper people.

Good luck with your search!

Ps. I love Cash and I wouldn't trade him for anything, but I know I would make a better choice if I could do it over again. The difference between him and June just highlights the difference between breeders for me.
