| Bailey's flight to come home is booked for next Friday! He is flying from Montreal to Labrador. The breeder told me to take some honey with me when I go pick him up at the airport. Honey??? I tried to do a search but either my search never works on here, or I am doing somthing wrong, I can't seem to find anything on honey She said to give him about 1 tsp of honey or corn syrup and water for about 2 or 3 days, does this sound right? Do you just rub the honey on the puppy's gums? I can imagine he will be very stressed

| Yep... or you could buy NutriCal at any pet store. It helps these little ones from a hypoglycemia attack which is caused from not eating. It's more common in toy breeds and you want to make sure they get the right nutrients. You can do a search on Nutrical or karo syrup.

| I periodically have to use Karo syrup with Sophie. That's what the vet recommended. I will say that if I don't have help giving it to her, I end up with the hair around her mouth all sticky. |

| I use the Nutrical and just squeeze a little on my finger and rub it on their gums. It is absorbed very quickly that way. I have used Karo syrup the same way but it is a little messier. I have read not to use honey for the same reason we are now advised not to give it to our human babies. It used to be safe but now there is a high incidence of botulism spores in many areas. Honey is not pateurized, but neither is most corn syrup so not sure if that is really all that great either. Over a year old, humans can tolerate the relatively small incidence of botulism spores. But I avoid honey and now the corn syrup too for my pups. Nutrical should be available at most any pet store.

| I agree with FlDebra. You can't give honey to human babies safely until 2 yrs so I won't give it to my puppies. Nutri-Cal can be a little more costly but at least you will know it is safe. I never needed mine but used it a few times as a precaution. Just squeeze a dab on your finger, the pup will lick it off, apparently it tastes good. I have used Nutri-Cal when I first brought mine home to relieve stress and prevent hypoglycemia and that's all she is suggesting to you with the honey. Just switch the sugar product. Good luck with your baby, I'm sure you both will do fine. |

| Thank you! I am going to get the Nutrical since it is used for that specific problem. Poor puppy.

| Yes, I give Sophie 1.25 cc in a syringe. She just fights me a little with it, so it's hard to hold her and attempt to pry her mouth open to get the Karo syrup in her. |

| NutriCal or Nutri Drops is your best bet. NutriDrops is a liquid and absorbed much faster than NutriCal. Just be careful not to overdo.....NutriCal if used excessively can cause your pups to become diabetic. But, it is great to have on hand for new puppies as a preventative for hyperglycemia.
