New mommy asks: Is food allergy causing hair problems?? Hi, everyone!!! I got Lady Coco almost 3 months ago and she had beautiful hair. Now, her legs and chest have very few, thin and short hair, and I noticed that is breaking off. The vet said that she is probably allergic to Eukanuba, but Im afraid that he just want to sell his own brand, Royal Canin... Anyone can help? Also the trainer said that maybe the dog is not a real yorkie and this is the reason of the hair loss...

All sorts of things can cause hair loss, from allergies to thyroid imbalances. Can you tell us a little more about her background? How old is she? Where did you get her? If food allergies are suspected, a switch to Royal Canin wouldn't be a good idea because it's full of corn which is known to cause allergies. Are you sure he wasn't recommending Waltham, their prescription brand? Not sure what not being purebred would have to do with hair loss....

Thanx for answering so fast! My baby is 4 months and 2 weeks old and I got her at a Pet Expo, where the breeder seemed confident about the puppies he was selling. Is it better to change the vet before trying to change the food? I'm trying to upload a pict of my dog taken 2 days ago, so you have a better idea how she looks like.

Well, she's very cute. I'm not sure why you're so bent on changing vets but if you don't trust him/her, you should change regardless of the problem with your dog. I'm also pretty sure that those pet expo's are selling puppy mill puppies which is a horrible thing and your pup may have more of an illness than you hoped for. It could very well be an allergy, among many other things, but I wouldn't change to Eukanuba but a more natural brand with no preservatives and dyes and all that. Ever try Honest Kitchen? My Curly really loves it. I hear Halo is good also but I don't know personally. Good luck with figuring it all out.

Food allergies are very uncommon in a puppy so young. The body has to have constant exposure and time to build up antibodies against an ingredient to have an allergic reaction. She needs to have a skin scraping IMO. More than likely she has a mite or a skin infection causing her hair loss. | |
