| Introducing dogs My boyfriend's roommate has the most wonderful, friendly German shepherd mix. She is 3 years old and her name is Maggie. I don't think she realizes how big she is. As soon as I sit down she's cuddling in my lap! We talked to his roommate and he said it would be fine if I brought Layla over, because Maggie loves other dogs and he thought they would get along fine. Last night, I took Layla there for the first time. My boyfriend went in first to hold Maggie, while I brought Layla in. I held Layla and let them sniff each other. Maggie was so excited, it was hard for my boyfriend to even hold her down! We went downstairs and I let Layla down while Maggie was still being held. Layla had her head down, tail down (but wagging) and she was looking up at Maggie as she crept forward and sniffed at her nose. However, as soon as Maggie tried sniffing at Layla, Layla would cower! In my boyfriend's room, Layla jumped on the bed and Maggie would jump up right after her. She would go down on her front legs as if she wanted to play. Layla would turn her head away and pant quickly as soon as Maggie came near. We made Maggie sit on the floor, but she would lay her head on the bed, looking towards Layla. Every once in awhile, Layla's ears would perk up and she would be a little curious towards Maggie, but of course Maggie would perk up from seeing that, and Layla would cower again. As soon as we closed the door on Maggie, Layla was back to normal, playing and running around. I guess my question is, how can I influence Maggie to calm down when Layla is around? We would love to be able to have Layla there and not just be locked in my boyfriend's room all the time. I know it will definitely take more than one meeting for them to get used to each other, but I feel like there should be something more I'm doing to help the situation. I'd also like to know if there's anything I was doing wrong!

| Well all things considered, I think that was a good first meeting. My only thought, besides just keep at it and give it some time, is if there is anyway to exercise Maggie before hand - to get rid of some of her energy - that might be helpful. Just keep encouraging Layla when she does show interest, maybe be down on the floor with Maggie so Layla can see she's not a danger. Good Luck!

| Thanks! I just talked to my boyfriend about that. He said Maggie has a lot of pent up energy because his roommate just takes her for one half hour walk every day. They have a tiny yard, so she never really gets to go run anywhere. A couple of times when she was trying to play with Layla, she was being pretty rough without even meaning to. She laid on the bed on her side beside Layla, and was kind of flailing her front legs for Layla to play with her, but she wacked Layla in the face with one of her paws, and she also almost pushed her right off my lap. Layla got out of the room once and tried to go upstairs. Maggie thought she was running to play, so Maggie chased after her. Layla was halfway up the stairs when she saw Maggie barreling after her, so she cowered on the stair and Maggie jumped right over her. Poor thing was so scared she was shaking! (so was I!) I really think the exercise thing is a big issue here. Maggie is constantly in that state, when someone is around she wants to jump and play. She is never tired, she is never "calm-submissive"

| Taking her for a walk before they get together is a great idea, also try walking them together. We have a Rotti named Mandy, Mandy thinks she's a yorkie, Princess and Mandy play great together. Best of luck
