Introducing dogs My boyfriend's roommate has the most wonderful, friendly German shepherd mix. She is 3 years old and her name is Maggie. I don't think she realizes how big she is. As soon as I sit down she's cuddling in my lap! We talked to his roommate and he said it would be fine if I brought Layla over, because Maggie loves other dogs and he thought they would get along fine.
Last night, I took Layla there for the first time. My boyfriend went in first to hold Maggie, while I brought Layla in. I held Layla and let them sniff each other. Maggie was so excited, it was hard for my boyfriend to even hold her down! We went downstairs and I let Layla down while Maggie was still being held. Layla had her head down, tail down (but wagging) and she was looking up at Maggie as she crept forward and sniffed at her nose. However, as soon as Maggie tried sniffing at Layla, Layla would cower!
In my boyfriend's room, Layla jumped on the bed and Maggie would jump up right after her. She would go down on her front legs as if she wanted to play. Layla would turn her head away and pant quickly as soon as Maggie came near. We made Maggie sit on the floor, but she would lay her head on the bed, looking towards Layla. Every once in awhile, Layla's ears would perk up and she would be a little curious towards Maggie, but of course Maggie would perk up from seeing that, and Layla would cower again. As soon as we closed the door on Maggie, Layla was back to normal, playing and running around.
I guess my question is, how can I influence Maggie to calm down when Layla is around? We would love to be able to have Layla there and not just be locked in my boyfriend's room all the time. I know it will definitely take more than one meeting for them to get used to each other, but I feel like there should be something more I'm doing to help the situation. I'd also like to know if there's anything I was doing wrong!
