How can one be a professional dog trainer??? I studied Health Psychology in college and was always interested in alternate ways to deal with psychological problems. I, myself, don't really like to rely on the medication. (I know.. for some people meds work well because of their chemimcal unbalance in their body.) I focused on how religion, animal (pets including aquariams), and meditation help people emotionally. I always wanted to pursue my education in Health Psychology but due to my immigration and personal situation, I haven't been able to. I am not sure if it is really going to be my real passion. But after reciving thoughtful messages and posts from people at Yorkietalk, I would like to see the option to be a professional dog trainer for service dogs /therapy dogs. It just came to my mind. Anyone has information on any school or steps that people take to be a professional dog trainer? Michiko

Well I'm not much help, but you can call the training centers near you and ask what qualifactions you would need to train there. They should be able to tell you where to take the necessary classes....

Call other trainers. I have a niece who is now training certified Drug, Alcohol, Firearms and Cadaver dogs. She was taking her dogs for basic trainings, and the owner was more than happy to have her begin helping out, then asked her if she wanted to begin learning to really train. It is perfect for her. She trains a lot of border collies and shepherds. She also occasionally takes her one dog to do a sweep of the high school with local police (in Iowa) and when she does is pd $1500/ for about an hour work. Pretty neat!
