Im not sure if you can really expect a little pup to have any remorse can you?? Calm and consistant is the key. Shouting will just make your pup want to shout back at you.

I think tobie gets the gist of when he is in trouble and will usually stop the behavior but then he carries on his merry little way. He doesn't show any remorse like my older dogs do when they get in trouble.

I don't know how old she/he is but my Jemma does the same thing and she is 5 months old. I was so mad that she barked trying to show me she was pack leader. Ummm, I don't think so. She would start to run and I would chase her till I got her and put her in her puppy playpen for a short period of time. I only do it to let her cool down and then I take her out. Because she is in her puppy pen when I have to work. Kinda like her own bedroom/den. HOWEVER, I finally found something that she didn't like...at all. I took a coffee can and put coins and a few bolts in it. Now she learned real fast. Just try it. They hate the sound. Now f she even see's me heading for the can, she stops lol But please try it. Someone told me to try and I was glad I did. I, too, was getting really upset that she thought she was the head. I took that away from her and put her in her place, which was below me. One strong suggestion is, you must say no at the same time you shake the can. Soon she will associate the word with that can and realizes in turn that "No" is negative.
Rarely do I use the can. Come to think of it, I haven't used it now for 3 weeks. Give it a try, it doesn't cost a thing.
If you do, let me know if it works for you.
BTW, I just taught my 8 yr old Granddaughter how to use it. Jemma goes nuts when she see's her,she loves her. But when she starts to get a little nuts, my Granddaughter uses it. I told her only one shake and the word No. But again, the two are just kids. But it's kidding a lot better

I am over it now. I just felt like the OP was attacking me. I did not understand how my post offended the O.P. Other people had similar responses and the O.P. did not go after them.

Ive had the same problem...sometimes people ask for opinions and then get offended if you give one that they dont like! i stopped posting for a while the last time that happened to me. I just tell myself that in amongst all us 'normal' folks out there, there are also a lot of 'odd' ones...lol

I put all of my pups on their back until they are in a state of submission. Usually will wag their tails. Im on the floor next to them and I growl a little. I never use a harsh word or tone. They know Im the leader. The OP dog thinks she is the Leader of their house..If you have ever raised pups, around 10 to 12 weeks the mom will put her pups on their backs. They learn submission at an early age. I kept one of Lolas Pups, Pablo and he knows when his mom means buisness, he will lay on his back and wag his tail...

My Pasta puts himself in timeout. If he has an accident i dont have to put him in his naughty corner anymore. He puts himself there. Ill find him there with his tail between his legs and shakin a way. Its so hard not to laugh when he's suppose to be in trouble.

Two things that worked for me. A quick squirt from my water bottle as I say "no!" and if that fails, the submission roll on the side (only used for really unacceptable behavior)

I agree with most of your post. The part I would be concerned about is chasing her down. I just feel it's encouraging her to run away at anytime if you chase her when she's in trouble. I know with Roxie it works better for me to turn my back to her.

First let me say that people can read into another persons words the wrong way. Without being able to see another's face or hear the tone of their voice, things can go bad.

JoshieBoy and I have mended our feelings through pm. I have assured her that I was not offended by her comments. I did not see the rest of her posts til tonight. I went to bed last night after my last post, and I can not access this website at work, due to strict regulations where i work. I did not realise she was upset.

When Chip was a puppy, I would roll him on his back and force him to submit. Now if he gets in trouble, he crawls on the floor towards us, with his ears pinned back. Smokey will turn his head away from us or roll over on his back without any prompting. My dogs are also two years old. I'm not sure how old your dog is, but if she's still a puppy, give her more of a chance. She's little and she's still learning. You wouldn't expect a toddler to immediately know how to share their toys, right? Same scenario. I do know what it's like when they seem to "sass" you. Smokey sometimes gets into these barking fits and when I tell him to "Quiet" he'll pause, look square in my eyes, and bark once more. I tell him quiet again, and he'll repeat. Finally, I'll go to get up to hold his mouth shut, force submission... something, and he'll sprint off in the other direction. I can't help but laugh sometimes cause he just wants to play and wants attention, but sometimes it just isn't the right time and they do need to learn to listen.

I can see where you thought it was a smart-a** retort to your post.

I then went back in, read your post and quoted you, because you brought up a great point and something that I am scared about. = Not being able to keep the upper hand on my Bonnie. Yes, I have to admit that she was adorable when she did it, but I know that I can not allow that behavior.

So to you I am sorry for the misunderstanding. You offered some very good advice, and yes your posts were nice and sweet.

Yes MollysMum, I did the smiley with the tongue to show her sassing was amusing. You are right. Thank you for taking up for JoshieBoy, that was very kind of you. But as cute as it was, I do need advise on how to handle "little miss sassy mouth"

And I do love, love, love my baby and I assure you that I do not shout at Bonnie. And I hope you read this and do not consider me "odd". Just a normal, new yorkie mom trying my best to train my baby, so that she grows up to be the bestest baby ever.

One thing I have learned thru owning dogs...is that each dog is different...where some may show remorse or feel bad for being in trouble then there are those others that NEVER WILL show any remorse!

But that doesn't mean that you can't make them be obedient and submissive to you... Since you have the second type...you just simply need to find something that works like the "can of coins"...or "the water bottle"...so that she will at least behave...and not sass you...That way she will be submissive to you...and respect you as pack leader..

Also I would definately take her on walks and make her stay by your side...that will also teach her that you are the leader....that's a fast way to train them..and you will both have a good time on the walk.
