| NEED ADVICE, on Grooming! I've decided to cut down on expenses, so I am going to try and groom Marley myself. Since, I have no experience I need advice!! First, can someone suggest good products? Scissors, brush, ect. Are there steps I need to consider? For example do I bathe him first then give him a haircut? Anal cleaning? How often and how do I do it? Cleaning his ears? What do I need to do? Paws? How do I clean is paws? And, finally claws? I have been considering using the "Pedi-Paw", has anyone ever used this product? I will be making a trip to PetsMart tonight, to buy some items. Any advice is helpful!! Thank you!!! |

| I don't do my own grooming, but, my groomer is my next door neighbor, and I can answer some questions. Anal glands shouldn't even be messed with, unless the dog is having problems. When they do, I would advice you to take them to the vet, as you can hurt them if you don't know what you're doing. You should never brush a yorkie when they're dry. I have a pedi paws, I have tried it, believe me, they don't put their paws out as to say here mom, clip away like it shows. If you can get your dog to walk, then if you take him/her for walks on cement, that will keep the nails trimmed down. Good luck on your grooming.. Do you have a college nearby where you could learn to be a groomer? The neighbor said it only takes a few short mos. to become a groomer |

Donating YT 10K Club Member | You'll need a pin brush and a butter comb. Personally I love the brushes from Chris Christenson. Those are not available at petsmart. Another CC brush that comes highly recommended to me...is the wooden bristle brush. I have one on the way...but haven't tried it yet. I hear it's wonderful for working out mats. A human pair of shears will work for trimming up ears, and pads. You need to invest in a nice set of clippers. You can purchase them with a variety of clipper attachments for different lengths. I use a nail clipper on mine. Their nails are clipped every 2 weeks. If you can hear the sound of nails when they walk on the floor...they're too long. Before doing any clipping...he needs to brush out thoroughly. Use a comb to determine if his coat is knot free. This step is more important than whether or not to bathe first. The hair inside the ear canel needs to be removed. You can use your fingers and ear powder to get it out. The edges of the ears should be kept trimmed and even with the ear cartiledge. They should be shaved a 1/3 the way down inside and out. Imagine a traingle. The hair should be trimmed between their paw pads. Good luck...and remember it's only hair. I haven't ever gotten as angry at ME...as I have a groomer.

| I do most of my own grooming also to cut down on expenses. Also, I enjoy it most times because it's a special time for her to learn to trust me. When she was a baby, I played with her feet and her ears and cleaned her eyes often, so that doing those things to her didn't bother her. Now, I do take Silvia to the groomer maybe once every couple of months or so, just because they do a much better job than me. But, in between, I bathe her every two to three weeks and trim her hair and nails and (attempt to) clean her ears. If you start early as a puppy, it's much easier. I normally bathe Silvia in our kitchen sink, because it is taller than a bathroom sink and I can sit in a chair and bathe her comfortably. I use moisturizing shampoo and conditioner and luke warm water. I use a puppy tearless shampoo for her head, ears and around the eyes, but use the other for the rest of her body. I've gotten her used to the sound of a blowdryer on low, so it doesn't bother her to be blow dried, but I also towel dry her face. I normally just barely trim her hair to maintain length, mainly around her mouth, tummy and feet. I use tiny manicure scissors to trim hair around her eyes. I also use some peroxide on a q-tip to clean around her eyes and get some of the discoloration out. It's not that hard to do if you start early and get your baby used to it, so it's not a fight. Silvia just sits there and even moves her head where I need it, because she gets lots of treats when we're through! LOL Look up some articles online for more specific tips, and good luck!
