| YT 2000 Club Member | Congrats on your new puppy she is a doll baby.. and welcome to YT.. wonderful people, lots of good advice. As far as the rabies goes, I guess it depends on where you live and who you ask. ![]() Ive always had my dogs done before they were 6 months old. Usually right before they are fixed. MY toy poodle had her's at 5 months old and she was barely 2 pounds and she did fine. However it does cause some major issues with some dogs so if you feel better waiting then do that, talk to your vet he/she may be able to help when to schedule it. Also Ive read on this forum that if you give the pup a dose of childrens bendryl before the vax that it helps with a reaction.

| Hi there and Congrats on your new baby. What is the weight of your baby? I give my puppies a puppy shot at 7 weeks old and a puppy booster shot at 11 weeks. Rabies should never be given together with any other shot. It is way to much for their little bodies and you can wind up with an overdoes baby on your hands that is going to need medical attention. So the earliest I ever suggest to my customers is at least 4 weeks after their puppy booster shot. If she is not in contact with a lot of other animals or could come in contact with a wild animal outside I certainly wouldn't be in any hurry to give her a rabies shot especially if she is tiny. |

There are a lot of excellent books with this information (such as those by Dr. Richard Pitcairn, DVM, PhD or Dr. Martin Goldstein, DVM for example). You have to be sure the information you get online is written by credible sources and/or provides their sources at the end of the article. Here's one good article in great detail by Dr. Pitcairn: http://www.drpitcairn.com/talks/look..._vaccines.html Here is some information from another vet about vaccine reaction: Vaccine Reaction In A Dog at ThePetCenter. Lots of information available about these problems. Whether you decide to do the rabies vaccination or not, I most definitely would never give it to a young developing puppy. Also, don't forget that the same amount of vaccine serum is given to a Yorkie as they give the same amount to a Great Dane or St. Bernard -- doesn't make a lot of sense. I hope you find these two links helpful but I do recommend getting one of the many books on the subject. All best and have lots of fun with that darling little Yorkie! Diane | |

| Congradulations on your baby girl now you can dress her up and buyall the girl stuff for her! I was not aware that in Canada , the Rabies shot is not required by law. If there is no danger of your little one being exposed to wild animals then I do not see any reason in giving her this vaccine. You can at least wait a year and see how big she will get fully grown. There is time to decide. In the meantime, have her vaccinated for her regular puppy shots.

I agree unfortunately its required by law here. I would still probably have it done if it wasnt, I live in the country and have numerous different kinds of wild animals that frequent my property.

| YT Addict | I live in Ottawa Ontario Canada and I do believe that it is mandatory to have a rabies shot. I am bring my little Pebbles in tomorrow for her first check up. I sure would like to skip it if I could as well, but I search on line and it does seem to be mandatory. |

| "It's a Girl!" She has a "tee tee". That's what we call it. Don't feel bad I've had a few embarrassing moments regarding my male dog that I won't go in to here. LOL. |

| It is required by law for your dog to be vaccinated in Canada, however, you have the right to refuse vaccination and depending on where you are, you may be fined by Animal Control (I'm not sure if the city does it any other way) if found out. This applies to Ontario: Health Protection and Promotion Act - R.R.O. 1990, Reg. 567. Your dog may be exempt from the rabies vaccine if your licensed veterinarian deems it a danger to your pet (i.e., has shown adverse reaction to the vaccine, and so forth). And there's also this article addressing various provinces and the fine issue in Winnipeg: "Winnipeg's animal control bylaw requires owners to be able to provide proof that their dog has been vaccinated against rabies in the previous 12 months or face a $200 fine.". You are not required to re-vaccinate your dog every year as long as you have proof that your dog has been administered the 3-Year rabies vaccine. Of course, veterinarians and other services reserve the right to refuse service to your non fully vaccinated pet, however, I doubt they'd do anything about it beyond turning you away. ![]() I believe in the past, the only times the rabies vaccination came up is when we were up for city license renewal... can't remember exactly, but I do know with my shih tzu, we did not go in every year for her rabies (for the 9.5 years I've had her) except maybe at the beginning of ownership (she was 3-5 years old) as that also coincides with when we actually registered her with the city. | hmmm my vet required us to give Wrigley the rabbies shot when he was about 16 weeks old. She said she didn't feel comfortable letting him go more than a few weeks more because I would be breaking the law. I guess all vets are different (and I suppose laws are differing between states too)
