questions onTraveling with your pet ?

Me and pixie my 8 month baby are flying out to see my parents and her grandma and grandpa. I leaving for 9 days so I cant leave her with a friend that long. Plus she like my daughter I cant go anywhere without her. So I taking her on the plane with me. Its 100 dollars on jetblue to fly her. And she has to remain in a pet carrier for the whole trip. I know she is not going to like it plus she is a whiner.
what do you think i can do to keep her calm

Talk to your vet about giving them a small dose of dramamine or a small dose of something that will sedate her. My mom's lab is so nervous and we gave her Benadryl on our last long car trip and she (for the first time ever) slept during the ride. She's 70 lbs., and I remember my mom and I laughing at the huge dose the vet told us to give her, but it doesn't affect them the same way it does us. She wasn't out cold, but relaxed enough to doze on the trip. Make sure she has a bone or toy to chew on in the carrier to keep her occupied. I would also sleep with her blanket (or a shirt) and put that in the carrier so something will smell familiar. I would also try to position her so that she can see you- it might help to calm her. Make sure she's used to and comfortable in which ever carrier you are using.

Talk to your vet. They need papers to fly and also he can give you something to help her relax and sleep.

My mom took her dog from Cleveland to Dallas last Christmas and she had to get papers and some pills from the vet.

What a challenge! But it will all be worth it when you have a fabulous vacation with your little baby! I'm sorry I don't have any good advise. I wish you well, and have a wonderful time!

ps, maybe you can sneak her out when the flight gets into progress...

The dramamine worked perfect for Daisy on are vacation !
It didn't knock Her out,still was Her robust self but it did help alot !
I Would for sure ask Your vet and have a great TRIP !!!!!!

I have not personally flown with Coco but my good friend Jen has flown with her dogs. She said they are perfectly fine and they slept most of the time. Just be sure to bring som Nutrical, a greenie or 2 for the flight and a few toys.

Pixie- how ironic that you posted this because I was about to start a topic about the same thing.

Tito and I are flying out Friday to go see my family for 9 days. I spoke to the vet who said she doesn't recommend giving him any sedatives because the change in pressure could be dangerous. She recommended giving him Benadryl and said that should be just fine.

I just flew from Ft. lauderdale, FL to Indianapolis with a layover in Detroit and then I had to drive 3 1/2 hours home to Hatfield, Indiana/ Beech Grove, Kentucky and on the way back had to drive 3 1/2 hours to Indianapolis then flew to Ft. Lauderdale with a layover in Memphis with Matise at the end of July, 2 very long days of travel. He did great we were so happy, it was his first big trip! I flew NWA(They were awfully rude by the way). They wouldn't let me take Matise out, which they aren't supposed to, I know , I would hold the carrier on my lap and slide my hands inside so that he could know I was right there and I wasn't going to leave him. the only time he cried was when I had to put him on the floor for landing and take off. I am a really bad passenger because when the attendants weren't around I took him out and held him in my lap with his blankie over the top of him. Then one of the attendants saw him and said I had to put him back-but they were so RUDE about it like what I had done was like the end of the world they could have been nice about it. Anyway, the minute the plane landed I took him out of his carrier even though you are not supposed to. I told you I am a really bad passenger..... I went to the vet before I left to get an ok to go and they gave me a sedative with EXACT dosing instructions but I didn't use it. Oh and I got the carrier I was going to use like 3 weeks before I left and started putting him in there a little at a time then built up the time so he could get used to it. I also took food and water and pee pee pads for when we had to wait during a layover. Also becareful they don't get to hot, I traveled in july and Matise got a little hot in the plane on one of the legs of the flight. Good Luck and have a great flight. Just got off the phone with the vet. She said 1/2 a tablet of regular Benadryl should be ok for a 10 lb. Yorkie (how much does Pixie weigh?). Give it to them approximately 30-45 mins. before you have to put them in their carrier.

You're not supposed to let them eat up to 6 hours before your flight or drink up to 2 hours before the flight (I don't know how accurate this is though).

Also, do most airlines require a certificate of health for your pet? I'm flying American Airlines and their website specifies that they do NOT require one (I hope this is the case, I'm not getting one and I would hate for them to notify me that I do once I'm already at the terminal). I am taking a record of his vaccinations and whatnot though.
