Wow - she's pretty particular!

When I was looking for a puppy, I narrowed it down to the breed I wanted (Yorkie) then I looked at them all. My 2nd pick to Missy would have been a teapot Yorkie. The Mom and Dad were both over 10 lbs and the puppies were quite large, but VERY cute. I"m all about finding a connection with a certain pup. It's more about personality, health, and of course the cuteness factor (which comes in all sizes).

The sad thing is, these people who want a "purse pup" for show usually end up abandoning them after a few months, once they realize that they are as much work (if not more) than a larger sized dog. I had a lady trying to sell me a Yorkie that was 10 months old that she purchased from westcoastyorkies.com. She wanted $3500 and she called the puppy "Dolce". I believed that she was one of these "rich ladies" who wanted the dog just for show, then realized how much work they are. It's sad! I really think these "tinies" need to be placed in a loving home where the owners are willing to take special care of them. I know even with Missy who is perfectly healthy so far, I have to be extra careful to be sure she eats regularly, otherwise her blood sugar levels drop and she gets woozy. They do take extra care.

Missy can't so much as pick up a piece of fluff off the ground without 3 kids taking it away to make sure she's "safe". We set out rules before Missy came home, and in 7 weeks time not ONE rule has been broken. They even go as far as to inspect her toys and be sure they are still OK for her to have with no tears or holes. They don't stand up while holding her. They don't run or jump around in the house anymore. They make sure all of their toys are picked up. They get it! My children are very well behaved however, and 100% supervised at all times. It really depends on the family I think.

This is all of course just my personal opinion, formed from my own personal experience. I'm not trying to cause a debate. I just really believe that every situation is different and needs to be accessed individually.

It sounds like you have done a great job with Missy! I personally would NEVER sell a tiny to a family with small children right away... but ONLY because there are definately people out there that don't realize the responsibility involved etc. HOWEVER If I got to know the family and they proved to care for the dog and it's health and prepared for it CORRECTLY like you have obiviously donethen I would not have a problem with it.

Gucci was expected to be 3-4 lbs full grown and right now he is 3.14 lbs at 4 months and losing weight his eating has slowed and his growth has also come to a stop for the moment.. I think he will end up closer to 4.5-5 lbs and I AM SO HAPPY WITH THAT! Everyday is so stressful with him being even 3 lbs, he's hurt his leg once and is just so itty bitty at just 5.5 inches tall so I commend you Missy's Mommy!!! I have 2 children 10 and 13 and they too are always supervised with GUCCI and are not allowed to walk around while holding him.

In the end I really think it all depends on the family and their intentions and reasoning involved. Some ADULTS I know wouldn't even get a dog from me lol . Simply because they wouldn't care for it properly and would want it for ALL the wrong reasons. These aren't a cute new accessory they are living animals that require lots of special care.

I have a friend that wants a "Micro" yorkie 1-2 lbs full grown.. and she thinks Gucci is tiny .. and asks do you really have to do all that? when she sees me preparing a bag for him or inspecting toys or harnessing him with a leash on the bed.. and I'm like "YES" .. he can die if he falls off this bed wrong.. I always get a look like I'm crazy and I Can't help but think .. THEN YOU DON'T NEED A YORKIE!!!!

Thank you Adrianna! I really do my best. I have to watch over my hubby more than I do my kids, he's the clumsy one!

Wow - I can't believe your friend purposely wants a Yorkie 1-2 lbs. When I got Missy I didn't even realize that she was a "tiny". I was uneducated. I just assumed all Yorkie babies were that small.

Just out of concern...I'm wondering, why is Gucci losing weight at 16 weeks? Is that normal? Or do you think he's just gearing up for a growth spurt?

lol I have to watch my Hubby more than anyone else too! The girl that wants the dog doesn't even know anything about the breed she just saw one that was as big as a soup can and wanted it .. I have tried to explain that they are A LOT OF WORK and hint around that maybe a REGULAR sized yorkie would be better. I didn't know yorkies were not supposed to be that small either when I got Gucci so I totally understand, he is even too small for me but I LOVE HIM DEARLY so we all watch out for him and get him whatever he needs.

As far as him losing weight, he is a CHUBBY BUTT lol... the vet always said he was chunky for his height and size but that eventually he would probably lose weight and taper off at somewhere around 4 lbs as an adult. I think that is what is happening with him right now as they usually stop growing around 6-8 mos. He has started eating slightly less than he was and has been super active since we got the x-pen and I think it's all just adding up .. vet says he's very healthy.. he actually has an appointment tomorrow for an exam and some vaccinations. I'll get a for sure weight then. Thank you so much for being concerned that makes us happy.

My kids are 9, 5, 3 and 2 - I'm afraid if I had one that small we would never find the puppy - the puppy would be hiding somewhere trying to get away from the kids. Everyone would be arguing over who is going to hold and play and lay next to the puppy and everything else!

The reality is that caring for a smaller yorkie is a challenge! But a fun one.

When I purchased Tulip from my breeder she only weighed 1.6 oz at 8 weeks old. He told me she was going to probably be small...We were hoping for 3-5 lbs. Daizy now weighs 6 lbs...and we wanted a big enough play mate for her.....However Tulla has not gained hardly ANY weight. We got her at 12 weeks and she weighed in at 1.8 oz. Now she's almost 4 1/2 months old and has only gained another oz. We aren't sure she will even make it to 2 lbs!!! So there are alot of concerns we have daily. We have LARGE dogs, but thankfully they have learned to be very careful around her. And our 9 year old is very careful too. Daizy (our other yorkie) is the one we have to watch, she has been rough with Tulla...but she is learning to be more gentle. And they just adore each other so that makes it perfect!

Tiny ones can have health problems, however Tulip has been healthy from day one. We've never even had to give her nutrical for low blood sugar...so just because there can be problems that is NOT the rule.

She does sleep in bed with me every night!!! I wouldn't have it any other way...lol She just cuddles up to my neck. And she hasn't ever gotten hurt. I'm such a light sleeper, I think if I weren't I wouldn't have her in bed with me tho.

We just adore her....So I can see how someone might see such a tiny little thing and want one of their own, however I am ALWAYS telling people that a TINY little furbutt is not for everyone.
