| Yorkie Outside in the cold Weather Hi All, I live outside of Philadelphia, Question - I understand that almost all dogs need a minimum of 30 minutes outside, but does this logic apply to when it is cold (brr. like 30 degrees and below) and my Oscar is about six pounds. He doesn't seem to care to be outside that much when it's cold and I even have to carry him outside! HE seems OK once we are outside but at time, he will sit down in the street and look at me, like he's thinking "carry me Mommy, now"!! Oh, Oscar is about 14 months old. Any advice would be apprecited. Kellie - Oscar's mommy... |

| I never heard of at least 30 minutes outside. Maybe at least 30 minutes of exercise. Treadmill

| Out side I agree. But mine go out side in the cold and run for about 1-minute and come back in. In the summer its different. they like me to go out with them and sit. we play but by no means 30-minutes its really humidity here and there little tonges come out. We play inside. Hope that helps Cheryl |

| On cold days Cassi doesn't even want to go out. She'll just stand by the door and after much encouraging she'll finally come out. But once she's out instead of doing her business, she'll just stand there and not move. At that point, both of us are cold and I end up carrying her right back in. Now, I don't even bother taking her out on cold days. She gets plenty of exercise at home when I play fetch with her.

Donating YT 3000 Club Member | I take my guys outside every day to play (besides Pottying) The air is good for them so is the exercise. When it's cold we put on our jackets They run around so much I don't think There cold. |

| Murfee very seldom spends 30 minutes at one time outside.

| Wow, it is probably below 0 here right now. There is no way I'd have Ellie out for 30 minutes...maybe 3-5 at the most. I've heard 45-60 minutes in walk time a day which I don't think can apply to small dogs when it is extremely cold unless you use a treadmill. I would play inside if your Yorkie is uncomfortable outside and if he is pee pad trained, maybe just take him out for a couple minutes a day so he doesn't have to spend 100% of the winter in the house?

Donating YT 2000 Club Member | My dogs can come in and out through their doggie door. No matter what the weather is, and it does get cold in S. CA at night, they would rather play in the house than in the yard. Never heard the 30 minute rule before. |

| Thanks for your message!! Oscar seems to do oK with not going out in very cold weather. his big walks are usually done (and by big i mean 30 minutes in one stretch) at lunch time. by getting his buns out at lunch, he gets most of his exercise during the day light hours. not at nite, when its colder...i still think he needs to be outside for a little part of the time, just for fresh air! |

| Wished i lived in SoCal right now. I read the 30 minutes a day rule from a puppy training book. but every breed is different. according to puppies for dummies, all dogs should get at min. 30 total minutes outside. i can tell you that Oscar and I don't walk in the rain. that's why i am glad he is somewhat pee pad trained. that's another post about the pee pads too. while it's convenient, it doesn't teach your dog to do his business outside....he still has accidents and i'm sure it's because of the pee pads!! |
