Max got neutered yesterday about this time (3 PM EST).
He also had 4 teeth pulled and was microchipped.
This morning... He is back to his "old" playful and loving self.
That is the problem...
The vets instructions say he is not supposed to jump, run or play for the first couple of days.
When I put him in his puppy play pen ...he keeps jumping up.
WHen I let him room around in the gated off kitchedn he runs and wants to play.
I take him outside...he wants to go for a walk.
You get the idea.
What can I do to keep him from hurting himself????

Haha, this post sounds like it could have been written by me! Miles got neutered a week ago, and from the time he got in the car at the vet, he was bouncing off the walls! I expected him to be drowsy or something, but that was definitely not the case. When we got home, he was jumping on and off the furniture and wanting to run around and play.
I tried to keep him occupied by giving him a big flavored bone to chew on, and packed his Kong toy full of treats. It also helped to be a little lazy myself and sit on the couch and watch a movie with him (I typically don't ever sit down and watch TV!). When I went to work, I put him in his crate so he wouldn't be jumping on and off things...although I'm sure he was still plenty active in there.
Just keep an eye on the little guy, and check his incision periodically. The first couple days are the hardest, but it should start to heal pretty quickly. Good luck!

I think it's more important for the girls to be kept "quiet" after spaying than the little dudes. For girls, it's abdominal surgery; their innards got rearranged and they have a major incision. For the guys, it's simply a snip and a tuck ... in the scheme of things, it's not that big a deal (except to men

!)

I wouldn't want them playing fetch or running relays, if ya know what I mean, but if they feel UP to normal activity, they're probably OK. Just keep an eye on them.

He came home very drugged. Really out of it.
Then at 11:45 PM he woke me up and when I turned on the light his tail was wagging and it was like he had come back online!
Good idea with the bone or Kong filled treat!
I swear he is all over the place!

I really would have thought it would have bothered him more. Once in a while he will let out a "yelp" while jumping or something but then he keeps going.

Ranger was the same way. There was absolutely no way I could keep him quiet so I basically gave up after awhile. He did fine. The kong and chewy were good ideas...it might keep him busy for a while!

I felt bad when Wizzy got snipped last month too but he was up and running and getting into mischief just like old times . We worry more . He healed just fine even with all the playing around .

Harley got neutered and chipped yesterday also. Daddy picked him up from the vet first thing this morning and the first thing he done when he got home was jump on my bed which is very high off the ground. I got him a couple of new toys when I was out shopping with my daughter today and that seems to have kept him quiet. Of course he is resting nicely now with daddy since he got his dose of pain meds about two hours ago! Yesterday when I stopped by to check on him my friend who works there told me "Oh, come on back, he won't even know your here - the most he will do it maybe lift up his head a minute"...not my baby he stood up and tried to come out of the crate to get to me.

My boy was fixed one week ago today. He came home and immediatly wanted to start running around. Now my boy bruised very badly. The vet said it was not normal for the boys to bruise like this but it seemed that my boy was a bruiser and bruised easily. Besides that he was healing well. They say the boys have a lot easier time than the girls. I made my boy stay in his crate for a day but after that he ran all over the place.

It isn't too hard on the boys but it was still surgery with an incision. The incision could still be affected if the stitches tear and abscesses can form. Restitching or draining may be necessary if something happens. I would guess this goes for the boys just like the girls.

I'd hold him when possible and crate him when you can't if he doesn't get too worked up in there.

My vet told me to apply ice packs

to reduce the swelling. No way that Gus was going to allow it. I thought it was just one more thing to make the neutering experience difficult (for me)

. Anyone have success with ice packs?

My little Abby was spayed earlier this month and never acted like anything happened at all. I tried my best to keep her quiet and worried about her being so playful, but she's done just fine! I can hardly even see where the incision was now and it's only been, 17 days!

I did lay in bed with her the first night and a lot the second day to keep her quiet. Will he lay down with you on the bed or couch?

When I got my female yorkie Dixie spayed and also two teeth removed and microchipped the vet said to keep her from running and jumping. Well I gotta tell you I did try and sometimes she would stop in the middle of her 120 miles per hour run and look at me when I got that scared look on my face. She did just fine and when my twin daughters got thier male yorkie Teddy neutered, microchipped and four teeth removed he came home and never stopped as well. I would not worry so much about your little one. It is problely better to see them playful and feeling good than limp and not. I think they will stop if they hurt. Good Luck, the neutering is so much easier, at least Teddy did not have to go back to get any stiches out, Dixie on the other hand did have staples and did have to go and have them removed. The vet told me he knew she would be "very" active so he chose to use strong staples instead of sutures. They are both fine now and glad it is all over. I was the nervous wreck, I wanted to camp out in the lobby of my vets office for the two nights my little Dixie was there.

It is much easier for the boys. I don't know about most but my boy did not et stitches. They just use glue to bring the small incision back together. The doc said it was pretty normal for the boys to start running all over the place. I actually was able to put some ice on my boy a few times. He bruised really bad. I just laid him on his back and placed a papertowel on the bruised section. Then I placed the ice on top of the papertowel.

Searching threads for advice on this topic exactly. Glad I found this one and see that my boy isn't the only crazy one, post op. Charlie was neutered today and has been his rambunctious self since we got home, like nothing happened. I tried to crate him but he kind of spazzed out, I think because he had energy he wanted to get out after being cooped up at the vet all day, I'm leaving him out for now and he's running around the house like it's any typical day. When I try to get him to settle, he looks at me like I'm nuts.
