| Help With My Yorkie Puppy at Meal Time Hello Everyone, I needs some advice/help with my yorkie baby. Sophie Kate is almost 6 months old, I have had her just about 3 of those months. In the last two weeks Sophie Kate has picked up a very bad habit during meal time (meaning my family's). While we are eating she will sit by the table and bark for attention. To make matters worse when we ignore her she starts growling and biting at our legs and arms (if she can jump that high). This is so strange to since I know since I have had her she has never had people food (one of my pet peeves is an animal who begs while you're eating). I have tried a firm "No", spraying her with water (advice from a friend, which she simply enjoyed and started acting crazier) and restraining her by holding her on her side for a few seconds...no luck. Since this is my first experience with a puppy any advice would be welcome. I should note Sophie does have a crate and her crate training is going so well we have let her out with the family a little more. Do you think putting her in the crate during meal time will break this habit? Thank you, Cheryl |

Thor's Human Donating Member | People food smells just as good as dog food, so from her perspective there's no reason not to share. There's a couple things you can try: - Designate a place for her to sit during meal times - like right outside the room. If she comes back in, walk her back with the "bump" technique -- get in front of her and slowly walk forward, forcing her to back up until she's back in her spot. - For barking, canned air works if you want to use a small disincentive. - Give her a "timeout" in another room until she stops barking, and then let her back in. Lather, rinse, repeat. - Or yes, just put her in her crate. - If you choose to train her to wait away from the table, it can help to give her some small scraps when the meal is over, but only if she has behaved. If she did, she deserves a reward for showing such restraint in the face of overwhelming temptation. Last edited by QuickSilver; 11-25-2008 at 05:45 PM. |

Thor's Human Donating Member | No, I definitely don't recommend burning your dog! I just mean the kind of air you would use to clean your keyboard. Basically like using a water bottle, except I've never met a dog that likes getting air blown in its face. It's quite startling for them. Who knows though, maybe your dog will be the exception that proves the rule! You should just need a quick blast. You could also try shaking some pennies in a can. |

YT 2000 Club Member | I put my 3 in their crate when we eat. Axl and Yumi Yasha are almost 6 month old and I just started to let them out of their crate more but not meal time. Jeter is 1 year old and so far has never whined for food while we are eating, or to get out of his crate while we eat our meal. My trick is to feed them and then let them outside to run and play right before our diner time. Their is too much food that they can't have that I don't want to take the chance of my children dropping something they can't have off the table.
