| New here. Need some info and help. Hello everyone on the site. I am new to the website and wanted to say hello. I decided to get a teacup yorkie for my mother for her b day being that she'd been dying for a pet. His name is "Shea" he was 8 weeks when we had gotten him. He's adorable, very, very smart for a young pup. The first night we laid a pee-pad out he went right on it and has been going on them for as long as week had him (about a month this coming week). I have a few questions as I am starting to become worried about him. No matter what toys we buy him he's constantly biting our hands when we pet him. He loves to play this way but I don't want him to become used to biting everyone like its normal. No matter what we do he's constantly biting our hands, when we walk passed him he continues to attack the feet (Which i'm sure is just a normal thing). He barks like crazy at us for no reason some times. I know he is a baby and is teething but I'm curious to see if they all do this? Any tips & tricks would be helpful. Thank You. |

| It's because you got him @ 8 weeks old. I got my Missy around the same time. I've been told that between 9-12 weeks is normally a time when the Mother and littermates would have taught our puppies not to bite. Some people suggest yelping "yike" like a puppy would when bit, and then IGNORE the pup so he knows you will not play with him if he does it. Good Luck with your training. P.S. I've also learned in my research as a new Yorkie owner that there is no such thing as a "teacup" Yorkie. They are all considered Yorkies regardless of their size. W*E*L*C*O*M*E!

| WELCOME TO YT!!!!!!!! This site rules. You will love it here! The above advice is definitely the way to go. My Louis was a nipper when I got him and the yelping/ignoring worked. Ignoring (social isolation) is the worst thing in a puppy's mind! So he will learn quick if he nips, he doesn't get attention!!! Post some pictures, we want to see the baby!!!!!!!

| As the others have said, your new puppy was taken from his mother too soon. Yorkies should stay with their mother and littermates until they are 12 weeks old. Shea missed very important lessons in socialization including bite inhibition so you will have to teach him yourself. Here is a good article that explains how to teach him: Dogs and Puppies - Training and Behavior Help |

| Hey guys. Thanks for all your help and advice so far. Just a little update and such. I did purchase the dog when he was 9 and 1/2 weeks old. So he was younger than he should've been before his mother was allowed to teach him. He seems to be learning when we yell not to bite he stops. He already knows how to sit and fetches the bone when I throw it. I did buy the dog with intentions of letting her (my mom) care for it and take care for it (of course when i have time I would as well) but i've become very attached to him already. I will def. post pics soon. How can I go about posting pics? |
